MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College men's soccer team defeated Mount St. Joseph University by the score of 3-2 Wednesday (Sept. 10) evening. The Pioneers improve to 3-2-1 on the season, while the Lions fall to 0-4-1 overall.
"This was a game where we would get the lead only to be pegged back. Credit to the boys for having the perseverance to keep fighting and then to see the game out," Marietta head coach
Joe Bergin said. "There is still so much to learn about each other. I had hoped to be a little further along than we are, but progress is being made each and every time."
Parker Bolin (Albany, Ohio/Alexander) scored his team-leading seventh goal of the season to give the Pioneers an early lead in the 18th minute.
Lee Miller (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) assisted on the goal.
Mount St. Joseph leveled the match three minutes later when a Marietta defender tried to clear the ball from the Pioneer box and deflected the ball into Marietta's goal for an own goal and a 1-1 tie at halftime.
Miller gave Marietta the lead again scoring an unassisted goal in the 63rd minute. Once again, the Lions tied the game with an unassisted goal in the 79th minute from Brennan Lewis.
Marietta scored the game winner in the 85th minute.
Alec Ellis (Charleston, W.Va./George Washington) sent a direct kick into the box where Bolin headed it towards the far post and a waiting
Connor Heramb (Willoughby, Ohio/Willoughby South). Heramb put the ball in the back of the net for his first goal of the season.
The Pioneers remain at home this weekend. Marietta hosts Franciscan University on Saturday (Sept. 13) at 5:30 p.m.
