MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College women's soccer team lost to Bridgewater College by the score of 2-0 Saturday (Aug. 30) evening. The loss drops the Pioneers to 0-1-1 on the season. Bridgewater goes to 2-0 overall on the young season.
"That's a team that should be ranked in a week or two," Marietta head coach
Zack Votra said. "Really proud of our group for putting in that type of performance against a top opponent. This program is growing and we've got the right people here."
The action was slow in the beginning as both team yielded no shot opportunities for the first six minutes. In the seventh minute, the Eagles threw the ball into the Pioneer penalty area and Marietta attempted tried to clear. The ball ended up with Bridgewater's Anna Belan about 10 yards outside of the box. Belan then sent a high arching shot over the top of the outstretched hands of Pioneer goalkeeper
Francesca Agliolo (San Gabriel, Calif./Mayfield Senior) and into to the nets, giving the Eagles a 1-0 lead. Marietta seemingly allowed another goal in the 34th minute, but the Eagles were called for a late offsides call, which negated the score. The Pioneers were only able to register one shot on goal in the first half and went into intermission down 1-0.
Both teams failed to make a shot for the first 11 minutes of the second half, but Bridgewater finally broke the ice. Lyric Birkley scored an unassisted goal from just outside the penalty area in the 55th minute. Marietta only ended with two shots for the remainder of the period and Bridgewater collected the 2-0 victory.
The Eagles outshot Marietta 15-5 and held the advantage in corner kicks, 6-1.
Marietta will next be in action on Tuesday (Sept. 2) when they travel to Washington & Jefferson College for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff.
