Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women’s Soccer defeats Washington and Jefferson for first win of the season

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Marietta College women's soccer team put together a strong performance to put them in the victory column for the first time in 2025, defeating Washington and Jefferson, 1-0.  The Pioneers improve to 1-1-1 and Presidents fall to 1-1 on the season.

"It was a great team win, " said Head Coach Zack Votra. "Dominated the game in all facets. Really proud of this group as always."

Although the Pioneers just scored the lone goal, they controlled the better part of the matchup as they outshot the Presidents, 23-4.  In the first half, after Pioneer goalkeeper Francesca Agliolo (San Gabriel, Calif./Mayfield Senior) made her only save, the Pioneers fired off nine consecutive shots.  Katie Heighberger (LaGrange, Ohio/Saint Joseph Academy) registered a total of four shots in the half, including two shots on goal, but W&J goalkeeper Molly Schoch successfully kept Marietta off of the scoreboard.  Both teams took a 0-0 tie into intermission.

The two teams remained deadlocked into the second half until Marietta was finally able to break the tie in the 57th minute.  Delilah Vazquez (Pasadena, Calif./Marshall Fundamental) made a great move to shake a defender and sent a shot from the top of the box that bent past the goalkeeper and into the net, breaking the tie.  The Pioneers kept up the pressure and controlled the next several minutes but the Presidents had one final gasp in the 88th minute.  Alexa Taylor's final shot was easily corralled by backup goalie Haley Dawicke (Newport News, Va./Tabb) and the Pioneers closed out the remaining seconds, claiming the 1-0 victory.

Agliolo played the first half in goal for Marietta and made one save in the match. Dawicke made one save as she played the entire second half.

The Pioneers will return to the field Saturday (Sept. 6) when they travel to take one Allegheny College with a 5 p.m. start time.
