Baseball sweeps OAC doubelheader from Otterbein

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College baseball team swept an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader from Otterbein University Wednesday (April 9) evening at Pioneer Park. The Pioneers won the first game, 5-3, and completed the sweep with a walk-off 7-6 win in game two. Marietta improves to 11-14 overall and 2-6 in the OAC. Otterbein falls to 12-17 overall and 2-8 in the OAC.

Marietta jumped out to a 4-0 lead in game one and then held off Otterbein for the 5-3 win. Cole Rieman (West Chester, Ohio/Archbishop Moeller) drove in the first run on a fielder's choice in the first inning. Jeremy Tonelli (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg) smacked a three-run home run over the right-center wall in the bottom of the second.

Jamie Perebzak got the Cardinals on the board with a sac fly in the third. Nolan james scored on an error in the fourth and Perebzak made it 4-3 with a solo home run to left in the fifth.

Nick Bonnizzio (Hudson, Ohio/Twinsburg) lined a home run to rightfield for the final 5-3 victory.

Zach Marzetz (Blacklick, Ohio/Gahanna Lincoln) (2-2) started and got the win. He threw 6.0 innings and allowed three runs, two earned, on eight hits. Forrest Havanis (Washington, Pa./Trinity) earned his first save of the season working 3.0 shutout innings giving up two hits.

Luke Walter (2-2) started and took the loss. He threw 6.0 innings and allowed five runs, four earned, on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Sam Sethna worked 2.0 hitless innings of relief.

Cael Magill (Atco, N.J./King's Christian) was the lone Pioneer with two hits in the game.

Drew McKenna (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) lined a walk-off single down the left field line driving in Cole Rieman (West Chester, Ohio/Archbishop Moeller) with the winning run in game two. Otterbein retired the first two batters of the inning before Rieman reached on a bunt single. Diego DeCello (Hamilton, Ohio/Badin) popped up in the infield, but the Cardinal first baseman dropped the ball keeping the Pioneer inning alive. Shane Rothlisberger (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) walked to load the bases for McKenna who lined the 0-1 pitch into the left for the win.

Both teams scored twice in the first inning. Marietta added four runs in the second. Bonnizzio hit a three-run home run to right-center and Rieman had an RBI single to right.

Nolan James hit his second solo home run of the game in the fourth making it 6-3. The Cardinals tied the game with three runs in the eighth. Jake Brown had a two-run single and eventually scored on a wild pitch.

Evan Wilson (Charleston, W.Va./Capital) (1-0) got the win throwing 1.0 inning of relief and striking out two. Reece Rupert (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine Richland) started and allowed three runs on three hits in 4.0 innings. Brennan Stobbs (Medina, Ohio/Medina) worked 3.0 innings of shutout relief. Cooper Fiehrer (Hamilton, Ohio/Badin) and Zach Madan (Lyndhurst, Ohio/Lake Catholic) combined for an inning before Wilson took over.

Brady Heagen (3-1) threw 3.2 innings and allowed one unearned run in the losing effort. Bryson bell started and allowed six runs on seven hits in 1.2 innings. Rabe Maverick worked 3.1 innings and gave up no runs on two hits.

Bonnizzio, Magill, and Rieman each had two hits in the game or the Pioneers.

Marietta hosts Wilmington College on Saturday (April 12) for Community Day. The first game starts at 1:00 p.m.
