MARIETTA, Ohio —
Cael Magill's (Atco, N.J./King's Christian) walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning of game two gave Marietta College a doubleheader sweep of Wilmington College Saturday (April 12) afternoon at Pioneer Park. The Pioneers won game one, 6-1, and then took the nightcap, 3-2.
Winners of four games in a row, Marietta improves to 13-14 overall and 4-6 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. The Quakers fall to 8-17 on the season and 2-10 in the OAC.
With two outs and runners at first and second base, Magill laced a base hit through the right side of the infield scoring
Shane Rothlisberger (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) from second base with the winning run.
Rothlisberger walked to lead off the inning and was sacrificed into scoring position by
Cam Russell (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan). Following a flyout,
Nick Bonnizzio (Hudson, Ohio/Twinsburg) was intentionally walked to setup the double play. However, Magill delivered the game winning hit instead.
Jacob Rocky (Strongsville, Ohio/St. Ignatius) started the second game on the mound and worked 6.0 strong innings. He allowed two runs on four hits with four strikeouts.
Forrest Havanis (Washington, Pa./Trinity) (3-2) got the win pitching 3.0 shutout innings of relief. Havanis allowed two hits, walked one and struck out two.
Nathan Powers (0-1) took the loss. He threw 2.1 innings and gave up one run on two hits with two walks and one strikeout. Trent Mendenhall started and threw 6.0 innings giving up one unearned run on eight hits. Brad Miller allowed an unearned run in one-third of an inning.
Wilmington got on the board in the fourth inning with an RBI single from Gabe McDowell. Russell tied the game in the fifth on a sac fly that scored Rothlisberger. After the Quakers jumped on top with a run in the sixth. A throwing error allowed Rothlisberger to score again in the seventh,
Magill finished 3-for-5, while
Cole Rieman (West Chester, Ohio/Archbishop Moeller) had two hits and Rothlisberger scored all three Pioneer runs.
Austin Ziance (Highland Heights, Ohio/Mayfield) (4-1) pitched the complete game in the first game of the doubleheader. He allowed one unearned run on six hits with five strikeouts in 9.0 innings of work.
Luke Chappie (4-3) started and gave up four runs on seven hits in 6.0 innings. Josh Harbaum gave up two runs on three hits in one-third of an inning. Miller pitched 1.2 shutout innings.
Wilmington scored one in the top of the first on an error by the Pioneer third baseman. Marietta took the lead with three runs in the fifth and then added one in the sixth and two more in the seventh.
Bryce Bogan (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) had an RBI single and Bonnizzio plated two runs with a single through the right side.
Thomson Babineau (Scituate, Mass./Calvary Chapel) drove in a run on a ground out to second base. In the seventh, Bonnizzio delivered an RBI single, and
Cole Rieman (West Chester, Ohio/Archbishop Moeller) plated another run on a fielder's choice.
Marietta plays a non-conference doubleheader at No. 4 ranked Denison University Sunday (April 13). First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m.
