BEREA, Ohio — Marietta College dropped a pair of one-run games at Baldwin Wallace University Sunday (April 6) afternoon in Ohio Athletic Conference baseball action. Baldwin Wallace won the first game, 1-0, and then completed the sweep with a 5-4 win in game two.
The Pioneers fall to 9-14 overall and 0-6 in the OAC. The Yellow Jackets improve to 15-8 on the season and 6-2 in the OAC.
Vince Dolcemaschio (4-1) tossed the complete game shutout for the Yellow Jackets. He scattered four hits, walked one and struck out seven.
Austin Ziance (Highland Heights, Ohio/Mayfield) started on the mound for the Pioneers and threw 7.0 shutout innings while getting a no decision. He allowed four hits, walked three and struck out seven.
Brennan Stobbs (Medina, Ohio/Medina) (1-2) took the loss giving up one run on two hits in 1.0 inning of work.
Pinch hitter Harrison Johnson led off the bottom of the eighth for Baldwin Wallace and singled up the middle. Reid Fleming ran for Johnson and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt off the bat of Joey Marousek. BW's second pinch hitter of the inning, Grant Mitchell, doubled to right center scoring Fleming with the winning run.
Dolcemaschio retired the Pioneers in order in the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings to secure the victory.
Marietta's best scoring opportunity came in the sixth when
Cam Russell (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) led off with a double. Following a fielder's choice, a walk, and a ground out, the Pioneers had runners at second and third. But Dolcemaschio got
Cole Rieman (West Chester, Ohio/Archbishop Moeller) to ground out ending the inning.
Rieman was the lone Pioneer to have two hits in the game.
Yellow Jacket pitching was dominant in game two as starter Brit Kostura took a perfect game into the eighth inning. The Pioneers finally got to Kostura in the eighth when Marietta plated four runs tying the game, 4-4.
Kostura worked 7.0 innings and gave up three runs on two hits with one walk and 10 strikeouts. Patrick Straub threw two-thirds of an inning and allowed one run on two hits. Jake Heatherington (2-2) got the win after working 1.1 innings of shutout relief striking out three batters.
Jacob Rocky (Strongsville, Ohio/St. Ignatius) started for the Pioneers and allowed four runs, one earned, on four hits in 4.2 innings.
Forrest Havanis (Washington, Pa./Trinity) threw one-third of an inning and
Zach Madan (Lyndhurst, Ohio/Lake Catholic) tossed 2.0 innings.
Jared Bees (Pittsburgh, Pa./Eden Christian) (0-2) was tagged with the loss after allowing one run on one hit with two walks.
BW took the lead with a run in the second. Marousek led off with a walk and stole second. The throw to second on the stolen base got away allowing Marousek to move over to third. Noah English grounded out allowing Marousek to score.
The Yellow Jackets took advantage of a Pioneer throwing error to score three unearned runs in the fifth inning pushing their lead to 4-0.
Marietta finally got on the board in the eighth.
Cooper Fiehrer (Hamilton, Ohio/Badin) led off with a walk.
Will Loftus (Westfield, Ind./Brebeuf Jesuit) singled to right and
Jeremy Tonelli (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg) followed with a single down the right field line scoring Fiehrer.
Straub replaced Kostura on the mound and walked
Diego DeCello (Hamilton, Ohio/Badin) loading the bases. Straub bounced back to strikeout the next two batters and BW was one out away from getting out of the inning.
Russell singled through the left side of the infield scoring Lofus. Rieman tied the game with a two-run double down the right field line. Heatherington took over on the mound and walked
Shane Rothlisberger (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) loading the bases again. A ground out ended the Pioneer rally.
Baldwin Wallace loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the eighth. Colin West was hit by a pitch. Mally Kilbane singled and Jace Druschel walked. Johnson was again called on to pinch hit and drew a walk scoring West with the winning run.
Marietta hosts Otterbein University on Wednesday (April 9). The first game starts at 4:00 p.m.
