DELAWARE, Ohio — Marietta College and Ohio Wesleyan University split a nonconference doubleheader Wednesday (April 30) afternoon. The Pioneers won game one, 5-2, and the Battling Bishops took game two, 8-0, in five innings. Marietta is now 19-15-1 overall, while Ohio Wesleyan moves to 10-26 on the season.
Marietta scored two runs in the sixth and two in the seventh to come from behind and beat OWU in the first game. The Pioneers jumped on top in the first when
Liz White (North Royalton, Ohio/North Royalton) scored on a single from
Adisson Heath (Weston, W.Va./Lewis County).
The Bishops responded with two runs in the bottom of the first. Avery Panozzo launched a two-run home run over the leftfield fence for a 2-1 lead.
The score remained 2-1 until the sixth.
Katie Sweeney (Alexandria, N.H./Newfound Regional) tied the game with a pinch-hit RBI double that drove in
Erin Beeber (Fairfield, Ohio/Badin).
Becca Streets (Buckeye Lake, Ohio/Hebron Lakewood) put MC in front with an RBI single up the middle scoring
Grace Elliott (Akron, Ohio/Green) for a 3-2 Pioneer lead.
Jordan Bradford (Wellington, Ohio/Black River) plated a pair of insurance runs in the seventh. Bradford singled to left center scoring
Kenzi Denzer (Louisville, Ohio/Louisville) and
Hailey Fordyce (Byesville, Ohio/Meadowbrook).
Camryn Kiefer (Massillon, Ohio/Tuslaw) (13-7) went the distance in the circle for the Pioneers. She allowed two runs on five hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Kaelyn Rodriguez (4-10) started and took the loss for Ohio Wesleyan. She threw 5.2 innings and gave up three runs on 10 hits with three walks.
Heath finished 3-for-3 with a double and one RBI. Streets had two hits in the game including a double and drove in one run.
Game two was all Ohio Wesleyan. The Bishops scored three runs in the third and five more in the fourth. In addition to the strong offensive performance, Makenna Knisley (2-5) tossed a no-hitter. She walked three and struck out two.
Aiyana (2-3) started in the circle for Marietta and was tagged with the loss after allowing three runs on seven hits in 3.0 innings.
Amelia Timko (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) worked one inning and gave up five runs on five hits.
Marietta closes out the season at Capital University on Saturday (May 3). The first game is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start.
