MARIETTA, Ohio — Muskingum University defeated Marietta College by the score of 8-6 Wednesday (April 30) evening in nonconference baseball action. The loss drops Marietta to 17-19 overall, while Muskingum improves to 27-10 on the season.
Marietta loaded the bases in the bottom of the first inning.
Jeremy Tonelli (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg) walked,
Cam Russell (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) was hit by a pitch and
Cael Magill (Atco, N.J./King's Christian) singled to right. A wild pitch allowed Tonelli to score the first run of the game.
Muskingum responded with two in the top of the second. Grant Mellerson singled and Conner Thamann launched a two-run home run over the left field wall for a 2-1 Muskie lead.
The Muskies put four more runs on the board in the third. The big blow was a three-run triple off the bat of Weston Melick. Thamann added an RBI single to make it 6-1.
In the home half of the third, Marietta cut the deficit to two runs, 6-4.
Nick Bonnizzio (Hudson, Ohio/Twinsburg) drove in two runs with a single to right field.
Cole Rieman (West Chester, Ohio/Archbishop Moeller) plated Bonnizzio with a single to left.
Both teams score one run in the fourth and one run in the seventh for the 8-6 final score.
Max Vosters (1-2) got the win for Muskingum in relief of starter Jake Roshau. Vosters threw 4.2 innings and gave up one run on three hits with three strikeouts. Roshau worked 4.0 innings and allowed five runs on eight hits. Gavin Schultz earned the save retiring the one batter he faced in the ninth.
Evan Wilson (Charleston, W.Va./Capital) (1-1) started on the mound for Marietta and took the loss. He allowed six runs on five hits in 2.2 innings. He walked three and struck out one.
Jared Bees (Pittsburgh, Pa./Eden Christian) gave up two runs on two hits with four walks and four strikeouts in 4.1 innings.
Reece Rupert (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine Richland) tossed 2.0 shutout innings to close the game.
Tonelli, Bonnizzio, and Magill each had two hits in the game for the Pioneers.
Marietta hosts Capital University on Saturday (May 3). Game one starts at 1:00 p.m.
