Baseball ends season with split against Capital

MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College and Capital University ended the season by splitting an Ohio Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader Sunday (May 4) afternoon at Pioneer Park. Capital won game one, 6-3, while Marietta took game two, 8-5. The Pioneer finish the season with an 18-20 overall record and 7-9 in the OAC. Capital finishes 15-25 overall and 6-12 in the OAC.

With the close of the 2025 season, the Pioneers will say goodbye to seven seniors. Fifth-year outfielder Nick Bonnizzio (Hudson, Ohio/Twinsburg), outfielders Cael Magill (Atco, N.J./King's Christian), Jeremy Tonelli (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg), and Cole Rieman (West Chester, Ohio/Archbishop Moeller), and pitchers Jacob Rocky (Strongsville, Ohio/St. Ignatius), Zach Marzetz (Blacklick, Ohio/Gahanna Lincoln), and Forrest Havanis (Washington, Pa./Trinity).

Capital scored three runs in the top of the ninth to break a 3-3 tie. Marietta got an RBI ground out from Bryce Bogan (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) in the second and a two-run triple from Magill in the fifth. Capital's Ryne McKinney had an RBI triple, while Michael Andryszczyk had an RBI single, and Kielan LaMarr plated a run with a ground out.

Tied 3-3, Ty Clifton was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Grayson Gulley scored on a wild pitch. Robby Harrison made it 6-3 with an RBI single to center.

Austin Ziance (Highland Heights, Ohio/Mayfield) started on the mound for Marietta and threw 7.0 innings. He allowed three runs, two earned, on nine hits with three strikeouts. Havanis (4-3) got the loss after giving up three runs on two hits in 1.1 innings. Brennan Stobbs (Medina, Ohio/Medina) allowed one hit in two-thirds of an inning of work.

Trevor Woodyard started for the Comets and gave up three runs on six hits with two walks and one strikeout in 5.0 innings. Casey Wilkins (3-1) got the win after throw 4.0 innings of two-hit, shutout baseball. He walked three and struck out two.

Magill finished 4-for-4 with a triple, two runs batted in, and one run scored. Jameson Embrescia (Aurora, Ohio/Aurora) had two hits for the Pioneers.

In the second game, the Pioneers scored eight runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings. Trailing 1-0, Will Loftus (Westfield, Ind./Brebeuf Jesuit) launched a two-run bomb way over the leftfield wall to put Marietta in front.

Capital tied the game with a run in the sixth only to see the Pioneers regain the lead with a three spot in the home half of the inning. Magill, drove in the first run of the inning with a sac fly. Diego DeCello (Hamilton, Ohio/Badin) followed with an RBI triple to right field and came all the way around to score when the throw to third base got away.

Once again Capital responded. The Comets scored three runs in the top of the seventh to tie the game, 5-5. Harrison lined a two-run triple to left center and McKinney tied the game with a single to left.

Magill continued to swing a hot bat driving in two runs with a single through the right side of the infield in the bottom of the seventh. The Pioneers pulled off a successful first and third double steal for their third run of the inning. Magill stole second and drew a throw allowing Bonnizzio to steal home for an 8-5 lead.

Rocky started on the mound and gave up one run on four hits with five strikeouts in 4.2 innings. Marzetz allowed four runs on three hits with three walks and one strikeout in 2.0 innings. Jared Bees (Pittsburgh, Pa./Eden Christian) (1-2) got the win tossing 2.1 shutout innings. He allowed one hit.

Ben Mohler (1-3) got the loss. He threw 1.0 innings and gave up three runs on three hits. William Furry started and pitched 5.2 innings. He allowed five runs on six hits. Brian Young and Jared Carpenter each threw in relief for the Comets.

Loftus was 2-for-4 with the home run, two RBI and a run scored. Bonnizzio and Cam Russell (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) each had two hits and scored two runs in the game, while Magill drove in three runs.
