ALLIANCE, Ohio — The University of Mount Union swept an Ohio Athletic Conference softball doubleheader from Marietta College Sunday (April 27) afternoon. The Purple Raiders won game one, 8-1, and took game two, 15-2 in five innings. Marietta falls to 18-14-1 overall and 5-10 in the OAC. Mount Union improves to 23-11 on the season and 12-4 in the OAC.
Mount Union built a 5-0 lead in game one and then added three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning for the win. The Pioneers got on the board in the top of the sixth when
Rachel Kazmirski (Colliers, W.Va./Brooke) singled up the middle followed by an infield single by
Taylor Airy (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) and an RBI single from
Grace Elliott (Akron, Ohio/Green).
Kendyll Cahill (13-5) went the distance in the circle for the win. Cahill threw 7.0 innings and allowed one run on nine hits with no walks and eight strikeouts.
Camryn Kiefer (Massillon, Ohio/Tuslaw) (12-7) started and took the loss after allowing five runs, two earned, on four hits in 4.0 innings pitched. She walked two and struck out one.
Jordan Bradford (Wellington, Ohio/Black River) worked the final 2.0 innings and gave up three runs on three hits.
Kazmirski was the lone Pioneer with two hits in the game.
In the second game, Marietta grabbed the early lead with two runs in the top of the first. Airy delivered a two-run double to left scoring
Liz White (North Royalton, Ohio/North Royalton) and Kazmirski, who both reached on a single.
Mount Union exploded for four runs in the second inning, eight in the third, and three more in the fourth for a 15-2 lead.
Aiyana Hancock (Marietta, Ohio/Warren Local) (2-2) started in the circle and took the loss. She threw 1.2 innings and allowed four unearned runs on four hits.
Emma Cozza (Broadview Heights, Ohio/Brecksville Broadview Heights),
Candace Walters (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy), and
Amelia Timko (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) all threw in relief for the Pioneers.
Emma Reemsnyder (4-4) got the win working 5.0 innings and allowing two unearned runs on three hits with seven strikeouts.
Kazmirski and White each had singles and Airy doubled in the game for Marietta.
Marietta plays at Ohio Wesleyan University on Wednesday (April 30). The first game is set for a 3:30 p.m. first pitch.
