MARIETTA, Ohio — No. 5 ranked Denison University defeated Marietta College by the score of 10-0 Tuesday (April 22) evening in nonconference baseball action at Pioneer Park. The loss drops Marietta to 14-18 on the season. Denison improves to 26-5 overall.
The Big Red pitchers had a dominating day on the mound striking out 15 Marietta hitters. Sam Larson (3-0) started and got the win after allowing just three hits and striking out 11 in 6.0 innings of work. Three other Denison pitcher threw an inning of relief in the shutout victory.
Denison got a solo home run from Cade Nowik to lead off the second inning for the first run of the game. The Big Red added a second run in the frame on an RBI single from Jack Steel. Erik Colaco launched a three-run home run in the third as Denison pushed it's led to 6-0.
Deniosn added a run in the fifth, two in the sixth and one more in the seventh for a 10-0 lead heading into the final two innings.
Reece Rupert (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine Richland) (1-2) started on the mound for the Pioneers and took the loss. He allowed six runs, four earned, on five hits.
Matthew Farmer (Amanda, Ohio/Teays Valley) gave up one run on three hits in 2.1 innings, while
Zach Madan (Lyndhurst, Ohio/Lake Catholic) allowed two runs on one hit in one-third of an inning.
Alex Dues (Fort Recovery, Ohio/Fort Recovery) pitched 2.0 innings and gave up one run on two hits.
Evan Wilson (Charleston, W.Va./Capital) and
Jared Bees (Pittsburgh, Pa./Eden Christian) each threw one shutout inning.
Marietta was limited to five hits in the game.
Nick Bonnizzio (Hudson, Ohio/Twinsburg) was 2-for-4.
Jeremy Tonelli (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg) had a double, while
Cael Magill (Atco, N.J./King's Christian) and
Zack Molloy (Chambersburg, Pa./Saint James) each had a single.
Marietta hosts Heidelberg University on Saturday (April 26). The first game is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. The Pioneers will honor their 1981 National Championship team in between games of the doubleheader.
