Baseball notches two wins against Heidelberg

MARIETTA, Ohio — Cael Magill (Atco, N.J./King's Christian) drove in Jeremy Tonelli (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg) with a single through the right side of the infield giving Marietta College a 4-3 walk-off victory over Heidelberg University Saturday (April 26) afternoon in Ohio Athletic Conference baseball action. The Pioneers completed the doubleheader sweep with an 11-3 win in game two.

Marietta improves to 16-18 overall and 6-8 in the OAC. Heidelberg falls to 14-23 on the season and 6-10 in conference play.

The Pioneers built a 3-0 lead in the first game plating one run in the first and two more in the third. Cam Russel singled up the middle scoring Tonelli, who reached on a single to left, with the first run of the game. Russell added an RBI double in the third and then scored on a sacrifice fly from Magill.

Heidelberg took advantage of a Marietta error to tie the game, 3-3, in the top of the fourth inning. Braedy Limke walked and Braden Keeney single to lead off the inning. Garrett Labeau dropped down a sacrifice bunt and the Pioneers threw the ball away at third base allowing both runners to score. Walpole later singled driving in Labeau.

The game remained tied until Magill's game winning hit in the bottom of the tenth. Forrest Havanis (Washington, Pa./Trinity) (4-2) got the win in relief of starter Austin Ziance (Highland Heights, Ohio/Mayfield). Havanis threw 4.0 innings and allowed no runs on one hit. Ziance struck out 11 and gave up three runs, one earned, on five hits in 6.0 innings of work.

Dylan Matusak started on the mound for Heidelberg and gave up three runs on six hits in 6.2 innings. Orion Kroah (2-3) got the loss after allowing one run on five hits in 2.2 innings.

Russell had two doubles and finished 3-for-5 with two RBI. Magill and Jameson Embrescia (Aurora, Ohio/Aurora) each had two hits in the game. For Marietta.

The Pioneers scored in every inning but two as the Pioneers easily defeated the Student Princes, 11-3. Marietta grabbed an early 3-0 lead and then added two in the sixth, three in the seventh, and two more in the eighth.

Heidelberg got on the board with a run in the fourth and then added two more in the sixth. Thomas McGuire had RBI singles in each inning. Keeney drove in the third Berg run with a single.

Jacob Rocky (Strongsville, Ohio/St. Ignatius) (3-2) started on the mound for Marietta and got the win. He threw 5.2 innings and gave up three runs on six hits with a pair of walks. Zach Marzetz (Blacklick, Ohio/Gahanna Lincoln) recorded his first save of the season throwing 3.1 shutout innings of relief. Marzetz did not allow a base hit, walked two and struck out one.

Corey Brafford (2-4) started and took the loss for the Student Princes. He worked 4.1 innings and allowed four runs on eight hits. Four other pitchers threw in relief for Heidelberg.

Five Pioneers had two hits in the game. Tonelli, Russell, Magill, Nick Bonnizzio (Hudson, Ohio/Twinsburg) and Diego DeCello (Hamilton, Ohio/Badin) each had two hits. Tonelli, Magill, and Will Loftus (Westfield, Ind./Brebeuf Jesuit) all had doubles.

Marietta hosts Washington & Jefferson College on Sunday (April 27) for a single, nonconference game at 1:00 p.m.
