MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College and John Carroll University split an Ohio Athletic Conference softball doubleheader Friday (April 18) afternoon at Marietta Field. Marietta won the first game, 11-0 in five innings, and the Blue Streaks took game two, 6-5. The Pioneers are 16-9 overall and 4-7 in the OAC. John Carroll is now 11-15 overall and 3-8 in the OAC.
In the first game, Marietta broke a scoreless tie with six runs in the third inning and then added five more in the fourth.
Camryn Kiefer (Massillon, Ohio/Tuslaw) went the distance in the circle for the win allowing just two hits and striking out four in 5.0 innings of work.
The Pioneers got RBI singles from
Liz White (North Royalton, Ohio/North Royalton),
Rachel Kazmirski (Colliers, W.Va./Brooke),
Adisson Heath (Weston, W.Va./Lewis County) and
Becca Streets (Buckeye Lake, Ohio/Hebron Lakewood) in the third inning.
Taylor Airy (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) plated another un with a squeeze bunt and the final run of the inning scored on an error.
Streets lined a single up the middle in the fourth driving in two runs. Airy followed with a two-run double down the left field line.
Emilie Johnson (Lucasville, Ohio/Valley) drove in Airy with a triple.
Danielle Orendi (4-7) started in the circle for JCU and got the loss. She allowed six runs, five earned, on seven hits in 3.0 innings. Casey Cash and Emily Graves each threw in relief.
Kazmirski finished 3-for-3with two runs scored and one RBI. Heath, Streets, and
Grace Elliott (Akron, Ohio/Green) each had two hits.
John Carroll scored four runs in the top of the fifth inning of game two breaking a 2-2 tie. Alyssa McPeek lined a two-run double to right, while Melissa Smith had an RBI single, and Norah Bradley plated the final run with a sac fly.
The Pioneers rallied for three runs in the bottom of the frame but couldn't get the tying run across.
Kenzi Denzer (Louisville, Ohio/Louisville) scored on a wild pitch and Johnson plated two runs with a double to centerfield. Johnson was left stranded at second base.
Kaylinn Samuelraj retired all seven Pioneer batters she faced to record her first save of the season. Kristin Dems started in the circle and worked 2.1 innings allowing two runs on five hits. Emily Graves (2-0) got the win. She gave up three runs, one earned, on five hits in 2.1 innings.
Kiefer (10-5) started and took the loss allowing five runs, four earned, on seven hits.
Jordan Bradford (Wellington, Ohio/Black River) gave up one unearned run on two hits in two-thirds of an inning, while
Candace Walters (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy) tossed 2.0 shutout innings.
Johnson finished 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI. White and Kazmirski each had two hits in the game.
Marietta hosts Bethany College for a nonconference doubleheader on Monday (April 21). Game one is set for a 3:30 pm start.
