Softball wins one, ties one against Bethany

MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College defeated Bethany College by the score of 8-5 Monday (April 21) afternoon in nonconference softball action at Marietta Field. The second game of the doubleheader was tied, 4-4, when it was halted due to darkness after seven innings. Marietta improves to 17-9-1 on the season, while Bethany falls to 22- 10-1 overall.
 
Marietta jumped out to a 7-0 lead in game one with two runs in the first inning and five more in the second. Liz White (North Royalton, Ohio/North Royalton) led off the first with a double and was sacrificed to third. She scored when Rachel Karmirski grounded to the pitcher and reach safely when the throw got away at first base. Kazmirski would later score on a wild pitch.
 
A Bethany error led to five unearned runs for the Pioneers in the second inning. Taylor Airy (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) reach on an error with one out. A single from Emilie Johnson (Lucasville, Ohio/Valley) and a walk to Grace Elliott (Akron, Ohio/Green) loaded the bases. White followed with an infield single scoring Airy. Kenzi Denzer (Louisville, Ohio/Louisville) drove in the second run with a fielder's choice and Kazmirski cleared the bases with a three-run home run for a 7-0 Marietta lead.
 
A pair of bases loaded walks resulted in two Bison runs in the top of the fourth inning. Bethany added another run in the sixth on an RBI single from Caitlin O'Farrell. White smacked a solo home run in the home half of the inning for an 8-3 Marietta lead.
 
Bethany tried to rally in the seventh scoring two runs before Candace Walters (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy) shut the door on the Bison for her first save of the season.
 
Camryn Kiefer (Massillon, Ohio/Tuslaw) (11-5) started and got the win. She allowed three runs on five hits in 5.1 innings with six walks and six strikeouts. Walters worked the final 1.2 innings and gave up two runs on one hit with two walks.
 
Katelyn Ziems (5-3) started and took the loss. Ziems worked 2.0 innings and allowed seven runs, one earned, on five hits. Victoria Wehrberger gave up one run on four hits with three strikeouts in 4.0 innings.
 
Kazmirski and White each had three hits in the game for Marietta.
 
Bethany took the early lead in game two with three runs in the top of the first inning. The Pioneers answered with four runs on a grand slam from Becca Streets (Buckeye Lake, Ohio/Hebron Lakewood) in the bottom of the third. Bethany scored an unearned run in the fourth to tie the game, 4-4.
 
Neither team scored in the fifth, sixth or seventh innings and the game was stopped due to darkness after seven innings.
 
Marietta hosts Denison on Tuesday (April 21) for a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader.
