UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio — John Carroll University swept an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader from Marietta College Friday (April 18) afternoon. The Blue Streaks came from behind to win the first game 8-7 in 10 innings and then completed the sweep with a 9-4 win in game two.
The Pioneers fall to 14-16 overall and 4-8 in the OAC. John Carroll improves to 19-11 on the season and 9-5 in the OAC.
JCU scored seven runs over the final four innings to erase a 6-1 deficit in the first game. The Pioneers scored two runs in the first, second and fifth innings.
Nick Bonnizzio (Hudson, Ohio/Twinsburg) smacked a two-run home run in the first inning and then had a two-run single in the second. Marietta's runs in the fifth came on a bases loaded hit by pitch from
Thomson Babineau (Scituate, Mass./Calvary Chapel) and a walk issued to
Jameson Embrescia (Aurora, Ohio/Aurora).
Three Pioneer errors in the eighth inning led to three unearned runs for the Blue Streaks. JCU added another unearned run in the ninth sending the game into extra innings tied, 7-7.
Marietta loaded the bases in the tenth but couldn't push a run across.
Cam Russell (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) reached on a one-out single. Bonnizzio was walked and
Cael Magill (Atco, N.J./King's Christian) singled loading the bases with two outs.
Cole Rieman (West Chester, Ohio/Archbishop Moeller) popped out to end the inning.
John Carroll wasted little time scoring the winning run in the bottom of the tenth. Dylan Sowers singled to right and moved to second when Ethan Glossa was walked. Erik Daugenti followed with a single scoring Sowers with the winning run.
Sean Connolly (4-0) pitched 2.0 shutout innings of relief for the win. He allowed two hits and walked one. Jake Corll started and gave up six runs on seven hits in 4.1 innings. Owen Gerba worked 2.2 shutout innings and Kevin Holland allowed one run on one hit in 1.0 inning of work.
Austin Ziance (Highland Heights, Ohio/Mayfield) started for the Pioneers and allowed one run o four hits with one walk and three strikeouts in 5.0 innings.
Forrest Havanis (Washington, Pa./Trinity) was charged with five runs, one earned, on six hits in 3.0 innings, while
Brennan Stobbs (Medina, Ohio/Medina) (1-3) took the loss after allowing two runs on three hits in 1.0 inning of relief.
Bonnizzio finished 4-for-5 with a double, home run, two runs scored and four runs batted in. Magill had three hits, while Russell finished with two base hits.
In game two, John Carroll sent 12 batters to the plate in the second inning scoring seven runs on seven hits and never looked back. The Blue Streaks added two more in the fourth and led 9-0 until Marietta put four runs on the board in the top of the fifth.
Magill delivered the big blow for Marietta with a two-run home run to left.
Jacob Rocky (Strongsville, Ohio/St. Ignatius) (2-2) started and took the loss giving up seven runs, six earned, on six hits in 1.0 inning.
Zach Marzetz (Blacklick, Ohio/Gahanna Lincoln) allowed two runs on three hits in 6.0 solid innings of relief, while
Zach Madan (Lyndhurst, Ohio/Lake Catholic) worked a scoreless eighth inning.
Frank Freeman (2-3) got the win in relief. He tossed 3.0 shutout innings and did not allow a hit. Kiayuan Baskerville started and allowed three runs on four hits in 4.1 innings. Noah Trojanowski gave up one run on one hit in two-thirds of an inning.
Rieman was the lone Pioneers with two hits in the game.
Marietta hosts No. 5 ranked Denison University for a single nonconference game on Tuesday (April 22) at 5:00 p.m.
