VIERA, Florida — Marietta College softball continues to roll with two more victories in the Florida sunshine Monday (Mar. 10) afternoon. The Pioneers are 5-0 for the first time in program history after defeating Wheaton (Ill.), 11-2 in five innings, and Nebraska Wesleyan, 7-2.
Marietta plated six runs in the bottom of the first inning against Wheaton (0-1 overall).
Taylor Airy (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) drove in two runs with a single up the middle and
Aiyana Hancock (Marietta, Ohio/Warren Local) plated two more with a single to left.
Camryn Campbell (Ontario, Ohio/Lexington) drove in the sixth run of the frame with a single.
Hancock (1-0) went the distance in the circle for the win. She scattered four hits and gave up two runs with two walks and four strikeouts.
Airy led off the third with a walk and stole second. She moved to third on a Hancock single and scored on a groundout from
Jordan Cholley (North Canton, Ohio/Glenoak) for a 7-1 lead.
The Pioneers made it 11-1 with four more runs in the fourth.
Liz White (North Royalton, Ohio/North Royalton) drove in the first run with a single to right. Becca Street had an RBI single, and Hancock delivered a two-run triple to cap the rally.
Hancock finished 3-for-3 with four RBI.
Emilie Johnson (Lucasville, Ohio/Valley) and
Rachel Kazmirski (Colliers, W.Va./Brooke) each had two hits in the game.
Against Nebraska Wesleyan, the Pioneers took advantage of an error to score five runs in the bottom of the second inning. Marietta loaded the bases with three straight singles from Streets, Airy, and
Amelia Timko (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick). An error by the third baseman allowed Streets to score.
Campbell reached on an infield single scoring Airy. Timko scored on a sac fly from Johnson and a double from Kazmirski scored Elliot and Campbell for a 5-0 lead.
Nebraska Wesleyan rallied for a pair of runs in the top of the third. Kamdyn Sprunk and Taylor Korecky each plated a run with a single.
Marietta added insurance runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Johnson smacked an RBI double in the fourth and
Hailey Fordyce (Byesville, Ohio/Meadowbrook) worked a bases loaded walk in the fifth making it 7-2.
Timko started in the circle and worked the first 3.0 innings. She gave up two runs on seven hits.
Camryn Kiefer (Massillon, Ohio/Tuslaw) (3-0) got the win after throwing 4.0 shutout innings. She allowed one hit and struck out one.
Campbell was the lone Pioneer with two hits in the game.
After a day off, Marietta plays Wisconsin Lutheran and Cornell (Iowa) on Wednesday (Mar. 12) at 10:00 a.m. and 12:15 p.m., respectively.
