WESTERVILLE, Ohio — The Marietta College women's soccer team gave up an early goal and could not overcome the difference as they fell to Otterbein University, 1-0, Wednesday (Oct. 8) evening in Ohio Athletic Conference women's soccer action. The Pioneers drop to 3-4-5 overall and 0-1-1 in the OAC. Otterbein improves to 6-4-1 and 2-0-0 in the OAC.
The only goal scored in the game came in the fourth minute as Otterbein's Olivia Brooks found a way to get a shot past Pioneer goalkeeper
Francesca Agliolo (San Gabriel, Calif./Mayfield Senior), giving the Cardinals the lead. Otterbein tried to extend the lead on the very next possession, but Agliolo was able to deny the shot. Unfortunately for the Pioneers, though, Agliolo was issued a red card in the fifth minute, as she fouled a player while trying to deny a goal scoring opportunity.
Maisee Carrier (Fairview, Pa./Fairview) came in and kept Otterbein off the board for the remainder of the half and the Pioneers trailed 1-0 going into intermission.
After not taking a single shot in the first half, the Pioneers were able to test Cardinal goalkeeper Ella Schwertfager twice in the second half to no avail and Marietta would go on to lose, 1-0. Otterbein would out shoot Marietta, 12-4 and would also lead in corner kicks, 13-6.
Agliolo worked a little over five minutes before her early exit, giving up the lone goal and making two other saves. Carrier worked the remainder of the game and made four saves in the matchup.
Marietta battles Heidelberg University on the road this Saturday (Oct. 11) for a 2:00 p.m. match.
