Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women’s Soccer holds on for a scoreless draw with Ohio Northern in conference opener

MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College women's soccer team began their Ohio Athletic Conference schedule hosting Ohio Northern University on Saturday (Oct. 4) afternoon.  Even though the Polar Bears had eight shots on goal and Marietta had five shots on target, neither team could find the back of the net and the game concluded as a scoreless tie.  The tie puts the Pioneers to 3-3-5 and 0-0-1 in the OAC.  ONU moves to 2-5-3 record, 0-0-1 in the OAC.

The Pioneers came out strong and tried to set the pace with the first four shots of the contest, resulting in two shots going wide and shots by Katie Heighberger (LaGrange, Ohio/Saint Joseph Academy) and Mallory Sullivan (Canal Winchester, Ohio/Canal Winchester) being  stopped by Polar Bear goalkeeper Morgan Moeller.  Ohio Northern had their first opportunity in the 25th minute but Francesca Agliolo (San Gabriel, Calif./Mayfield Senior) made the save to keep the game at 0-0.  Both teams traded possessions for the remainder of the half, but the Polar Bears had a final opportunity in the 42nd minute, which was again thwarted by Agliolo.  Both teams went into the intermission scoreless.

Ohio Northern quickly tried to break the tie in the second half as Rileigh Glassburn fired off a quick shot that was batted down by Agliolo.  Although Glassburn got the rebound and quickly tried again, the shot went high and the contest remained scoreless.  Marietta's Delilah Vasquez had a shot blocked in the 50th minute, but then quickly followed with a rebound shot that was stopped by Moeller.  That was the bulk of the Pioneer offense in the second half.   In all, the Pioneers were outshot 11 to 3 in the final 45 minutes, but Agliolo made good on all of her save attempts, including one in the final minute, to keep Ohio Northern off the board.  As the horn sounded, both teams finished in a 0-0 tie.

Agliolo played all 90 minutes in the nets for the Pioneers and faced 16 shots, eight of which were on goal, and made eight saves in the game.

The Pioneers will next be in action this Wednesday (Oct. 8) as they travel to battle conference foe Otterbein University.  Kickoff is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
