ALLIANCE, Ohio — The Marietta College women's soccer team again played a stellar defensive game as the Pioneer defense shut out their opponent for a fifth consecutive game. The difference in the match was a late first half goal and the Pioneers would hold on for a 1-0 road victory over the University of Mount Union on Wednesday (Oct. 29) evening. Marietta improves to 5-4-8 overall and 2-1-4 in the OAC. Mount Union falls to 7-6-2 on the season and 4-3-0 in the OAC.
Marietta tried to strike first as they offered the first shot of the match, a shot by
Katie Heighberger (LaGrange, Ohio/Saint Joseph Academy) in the seventh minute, but Purple Raider goalkeeper Leanne Williams was able to make the stop. The Pioneers offered three more shots before Mount Union had their first opportunity. Rylee Hutton attempted to push a shot by Pioneer goalkeeper
Francesca Agliolo (San Gabriel, Calif./Mayfield Senior) in the 35th minute, but the junior made the stop and the game remained scoreless.
In the closing minutes of the half, Marietta got on the board as
Mallory Sullivan (Canal Winchester, Ohio/Canal Winchester) found the nets off a great pass from
Tati Grigoryan (Sun Valley, Calif./Crescenta Valley). Mount Union ran out of time in the half and Marietta took a 1-0 lead into the intermission.
In the second half, the Pioneer defense clamped down and only allowed two shots for the entire 45 minutes. Mount Union attempted a shot in the 54th minute, which Agliolo stopped. Marietta would keep the Raiders without a chance to tie until the closing moments. Eleanor Busch's shot in the 88th minute was stopped by Agliolo and Marietta would go on to claim the important 1-0 OAC victory.
Agliolo played the full 90 minutes in goal for the Pioneers and recorded three saves on the way to her sixth shutout of the season.
Marietta wraps up the regular season this Saturday (Nov. 1) as they welcome in Wilmington College in the season finale. Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m. Before the match, the Pioneers will honor their five seniors in a Senior Day ceremony.
