MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College women's soccer team played in their regular season finale on Saturday (Nov. 1) afternoon and battled Wilmington College to a 1-1 draw. The tie closes out the 2025 regular season for the Pioneers as they finish with a 5-4-9 record, 2-1-5 in the Ohio Athletic Conference.
Before the game, the team celebrated Senior day and honored five young ladies who have been a big part of the program over the years.
Mallory Sullivan (Canal Winchester, Ohio/Canal Winchester),
Josie Van Kirk (Zanesville, Ohio/Zanesville),
Sara Morris (Mason, Ohio/Mason),
Meredith Devine (Beavercreek, Ohio/Beavercreek), and
Kelsey Bowman (Warsaw, Ohio/River View) were all recognized in the Senior Day ceremony.
"We accomplished so much this year," said Marietta head coach
Zack Votra. "And it all began with the buy in from this group of seniors three and a half years ago. We love them, and I couldn't be more proud of everyone here. We've worn the badge well."
Both teams battled back and forth for the first period with nothing to show on the scoreboard. The Pioneers had three shots go wide of the mark in early action. Wilmington registered the only first half shot on goal, at the 15 minute mark, but Pioneer goalkeeper
Francesca Agliolo (San Gabriel, Calif./Mayfield Senior) made the easy stop. The Marietta defensive unit did a great job of keeping their opponents in front and keeping the Quakers off the scoreboard. Both teams took a 0-0 tie into intermission.
The pace picked up even more in the second half, but the teams continued to stall offensively. The Quakers sent a couple of shots in the early moments that were stopped by Agliolo. Finally, in the 68th minute, Wilmington's Jordan Snyder received a great pass moving into the box, evaded two Pioneer defenders, and pushed a shot past Agliolo to give the Quakers the first lead of the contest.
Marietta was able to tie it up just 11 minutes later with a great shot and just a bit of luck. Quaker goalkeeper Emma Storck attempted to clear the ball down the field, but Sullivan intercepted the pass and, as she was falling to the turf, sent a shot from about 40 yards out. The ball took a funny bounce over Storck's head and into the net for a game-tying goal.
The Pioneers kept up the pressure over the final minutes but did not score again but effectively shut down Wilmington and did not allow a shot for the rest of the game. Both teams would have to settle for the 1-1 tie.
Agliolo played all 90 minutes and faced 14 shots, four of which were on goal, and made three saves in the game.
Although the Pioneers finished with a .528 winning percentage, their highest since finishing .500 back in 2016, it was not enough to get them into the OAC Tournament. Still, though, they finished the with the remarkable achievement of only allowing nine goals on the season.
"It's been a monumental season," concluded Votra. "This team set a school records for goals conceded in a season. They're the first team to finish above .500 in 20 years, and I believe we just set a record for the longest unbeaten streak at home."
