Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women’s Soccer scores a second half goal to defeat Muskingum

NEW CONCORD, Ohio – The Marietta College women's soccer team put together a fine performance on both sides of the field, and most importantly, got on the scoreboard late in the contest to defeat Muskingum University, 1-0, on Wednesday (Oct. 22) evening.  With the win the Pioneers are now 4-4-7 overall and 2-1-3 in the Ohio Athletic Conference and with the loss the Fighting Muskies fall to 2-13 overall and 0-5 in OAC action.

"We made a better effort to be patient in the final third today," said Marietta head coach Zack Votra.  "We've got more work to do, but this was a step in the right direction."

Marietta had an aggressive first half as they fired off 17 shots, six of which had to be stopped by starting Muskie goalkeeper Lucie Kotner, but could not put a tally on the scoreboard.  The Pioneer defensive unit also kept the Muskies off the board, limiting them to seven shots.  Both teams took a scoreless tie into the intermission.

The second half saw Marietta continue to put on the pressure as they fired off another 12 shots.  Marietta goalkeeper Francesca Agliolo (San Gabriel, Calif./Mayfield Senior) had another consistent performance as she, just as the first half, stopped all three Muskie shots on goal.  Finally, in the 76th minute, the Pioneer pressure paid off.  After Sara Morris (Mason, Ohio/Mason) sent off a pair of shots just two minutes prior, Shelby Carr (Pataskala, Ohio/Liberty Christian Academy) scored the first Pioneer goal in month, rocketing a shot in the nets to give Marietta a 1-0 lead.   The Pioneer defense kept Muskingum's scoring opportunities to a minimum for the remainder of the period and, in the end, claimed a 1-0 conference victory.

Agliolo registered her fourth shutout of the season as she played all 90 minutes in goal, making six saves.

Marietta will next play on Saturday (Oct. 25) when they host Baldwin Wallace University, with kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m.
