Wilmington downs Men's Basketball

WILMINGTON, Ohio — The Marietta College men's basketball team dropped an Ohio Athletic Conference game at Wilmington College by the score of 74-67 Saturday (Jan. 25) afternoon. The loss drops Marietta to 9-8 overall and 3-7 in the OAC. The Quakers improve to 4-13 on the season and 2-8 in conference play.

Marietta's comeback bid fell short as the Pioneers cut a 10-point deficit to one, 67-66, with 2:40 left in the game. But the Pioneers could not grab the lead. Rashid Chisholm nailed a three-pointer pushing the Quaker lead back to four, 70-66.

After missing a jumper on the ensuing possession, Marietta was forced to foul. Domenic Farley converted a pair of free throws with 37 seconds left on the clock and Obed Achirem hit a pair 10 seconds later to secure the victory for Wilmington.

Wilmington scored the first 10 points of the game and never trailed in the first half. The Pioneers managed to tie the game, 31-31, on a pair of free throws from De'Ovion Price (River Rouge, Mich./River Rouge) with just over one minute left in the period. The Quakers led 33-32 at halftime.

After starting the game with a 10-0 run, Wilmington scored 13 straight points in the second half. Marietta scored first on two free throws from Jayden Bradshaw (Blanchester, Ohio/Fayetteville-Perry). The Quakers responded with the next 13 points building a 12-point lead, 46-34, less than five minutes into the period.

Trailing by 10 points, Danny Flood (Valley City, Ohio/Buckeye) triggered the Pioneer comeback with a three-pointer. Price scored Marietta's next seven points on three baskets and a free throw getting Marietta within one, 67-66.

Flood hit four three-pointers and led Marietta with 22 points. Price finished with 13 points, while Bradshaw chipped in with 11 points. Frank Waganfeald (Oregon, Ohio/Clay) added eight points and a team-high seven rebounds.

Chisholm also sank four from behind the arc and finished with 19 points to pace the Quakers. Domenic Farley and Elijah Cathey each scored 14 points, while Achirem finished with six points and a game-high 12 boards.

Marietta returns home to host the University of Mount Union on Wednesday (Jan. 29) at 7:00 p.m.
