Men's Basketball falls at Capital

BEXLEY, Ohio — The Marietta College men's basketball team lost to Capital University by the score of 86-73 Wednesday (Jan. 22) evening in Ohio Athletic Conference action. The Pioneers fall to 9-7 overall and 3-6 in the OAC. Capital moves to 6-10 on the season and 3-6 in conference play.
 
Capital jumped out to an early 13-4 lead on the strength of a trio of three-pointers. Two from McKane Finkenbine and one from Se'Ron Calloway-White. The Comets led by as many as 13 points and had a 10-point lead, 33-23, with six minutes left in the first half.
 
Marietta went on a 13-2 run over the next five minutes to go in front, 36-35. Eric Chapman (Point Pleasant, W.Va./Point Pleasant) started the Pioneer rally with a layup and then three free throws from Konlin Brown (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay) and a three-pointer from Darius Carden (Ooltewah, Tenn./McMinn Central) cut the Capital advantage to two points. A free throw from Chapman and a bucket and two free throws from Jack Main (Winter Garden, Fla./West Orange) finished the run.
 
Capital answered with three straight points. Dom Moegerle made one of two free throws and Justin Nixon got an offensive rebound and tip-in for a 38-36 Comet lead with 28 seconds left on the clock.
 
De'Ovion Price (River Rouge, Mich./River Rouge) scored on a layup and was fouled with two seconds remaining. He converted the free throw giving Marietta the lead, 39-38, at halftime.
 
Capital opened the second half with an 8-2 spurt building a five-point lead, 46-41, less than two minutes into the period. The teams traded small leads throughout most of the half. With 6:57 left in the game, the Comets led by one, 66-65.
 
Back-to-back triples from Finkenbine pushed the margin to seven, 72-65. Capital gradually pulled away and led by as many as 15 points, 86-71, with just over one minute left in the game.
 
Price led Marietta with 16 points. Main had 13 points and Carden added 12 points.
 
Finkenbine led the Comets with 24 points finishing with five three-pointers. Justin Nixon finished with 15 points, while Calloway-White chipped in with 14 points. Moegerle added 10 points.
 
Marietta plays at Wilmington College on Saturday (Jan. 25) at 4:00 p.m.
