BRIDGEWATER, Virginia — The Marietta College men's soccer team dropped a 4-1 decision at Bridgewater College Sunday (Sept. 8) afternoon. The loss drops Marietta to 2-2 on the season. Bridgewater improves to 2-1-2 overall.
"As excited as we were about yesterday's result, we are disappointed with today's," Marietta head coach
Joe Bergin said. "We gave them too many opportunities and they are too good of a team to do that to. This can and should be a learning experience. As frustrated as I am, I know the boys are equally frustrated."
Bridgewater took advantage of a Pioneer mistake in the opening minutes to grab the lead. Marietta turned the ball over in the midfield and the Eagles caught MC keeper
Andrew Stein (Wilmington, N.C./Hoggard) too far off his line. Trey Widrick chipped one over the keeper from 45 yards out for the goal.
Alex Raudales scored an unassisted goal in the 25th minute to give Bridgewater a 2-0 lead at halftime. The Eagles extended the lead in the 51st minute. Riley Queen scored with an assist from Ali Malik.
Marietta got on the board in the 84th minute.
Ben Beckman (Columbus, Ohio/The Wellington School) found the back of the net off an assist from
Alec Ellis (Charleston, W.Va./George Washington).
Queen and Malik reversed roles for the final goal of the match. Malik scored in the 87th minute with an assist from Queen.
Stein finished with six saves in goal for the Pioneers. Charles Schweinefuss posted two saves in net for Bridgewater.
Marietta plays at Franciscan University on Wednesday (Sept. 11) at 7:00 p.m.
