MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College women's soccer team came back from a first half deficit and battled Mount St. Joseph University to a 2-2 draw Sunday (Sept. 8) afternoon. The tie puts the Pioneers to 1-1-2 on the season. Mount St. Joseph improves to 0-2-1 overall.
"Beyond proud of this team," Marietta head coach
Zack Votra said. "We talked at halftime and changed the game again. Absolutely dominated the second half and got a deserved result."
Marietta struck first and lit up the scoreboard in the third minute. After a Lions foul, the Pioneers were awarded a free kick at midfield.
Izzy Hank (North Olmsted, Ohio/Holy Name) sent a high looping pass into the box that connected with
Mallory Sullivan (Canal Winchester, Ohio/Canal Winchester), who promptly sent a shot into the upper left hand corner of the goal to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead.
MSJ answered in the next minute as Kerigan Pollard broke free just outside the box and sent a shot past Pioneer keeper
Maisee Carrier (Fairview, Pa./Fairview), tying the game at one. Three minutes later, the Lions broke the tie as Pollard received a nice pass from Mary Anhofer and booted a shot to the back of the net. Both teams traded possessions for the remainder of the half with no goals scored and the Lions took a 2-1 lead into the intermission.
Marietta stepped up the energy level in the second half, effectively keeping most of the action on their side of the field. In the 57th minute, after yet another foul by Mount St. Joseph,
Ryah Haidar (Sylvania, Ohio/Sylvania Southview) set up for a free kick close to the left sideline and just outside of the box. Her pass found
Angelene Kontul (Solon, Ohio/Solon) who, in turn, sent a shot past the Lions goalkeeper, tying the game at two. Both teams fought back and forth for the remainder of the game but neither team was able to break the deadlock. The game concluded with the score tied at two apiece.
Carrier worked the full 90 minutes and came up with five saves for the Pioneers
The Lions out shot Marietta 12-9 and held the advantage in shots on goal, 7-5. MSJ also held the advantage in corner kicks, taking three corners to two for the Pioneers.
Marietta's five-game home stand continues on Wednesday (Sept. 11) when the Pioneers battle the College of Wooster for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.
