MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College women's soccer team continued their long home stand and welcomed in the College of Wooster Wednesday (Sept. 11) evening. After leading at halftime, the Pioneers gave up some second half goals and were defeated 3-2 in non-conference action. With the defeat the Pioneers fall to 1-2-2. The Fighting Scots improved to 3-1-1.
Both teams battled back and forth with no offense taking place until the 21st minute. Marietta's
Angelene Kontul (Solon, Ohio/Solon) found herself with some space to work with and punched a shot into the lower left portion of the goal, giving Marietta a 1-0 lead. Wooster answered in the 35th minute as Charlotte Sefcik took a pass from Libby Kiker and found the back of the net, tying the game at one. Marietta wasted no time regaining the lead as Kontul free kicked a shot from 25 yards over the Fighting Scot goalkeeper and into the upper left hand corner of the net. This would be the final goal in the half and Marietta took a 2-1 lead into intermission.
Marietta was dealt a costly blow just two minutes into the second half.
Josie Van Kirk (Zanesville, Ohio/Zanesville) was issued a red card as she fouled a Wooster player trying to score a breakaway goal. Although the ensuing free kick did not result in a score, the Pioneers were forced to play the rest of the half down one player. The half remained scoreless until the 61st minute as the Pioneers fouled Lily Glaza. On the following free kick, Glaza kicked a shot over the head of Pioneer goalkeeper
Sarah Legg (Edgewood, Ky./Dixie Heights) and into the net, tying the game at two. The Fighting Scots then took the lead on the next possession as Alyssa Lubba snuck past the Pioneer defense and punched a shot past Legg to give Wooster the lead. The Pioneers could not muster any more scores and the Fighting Scots finished with a 3-2 victory.
The Pioneers tallied ten total shots with six of them on goal. Legg finished the game facing a total of 17 shots, eight of which were on goal, tallying five total saves.
The Pioneers will be back in action Saturday (Sept. 14) when they continue their home stand to battle Geneva, with kickoff scheduled for 6 p.m.
