GREENSBORO, N.C. — The Marietta College Baseball team had one player earn a spot on the coveted 2024 American Baseball Coaches Association NCAA Division III Region All-Defensive Team announced Wednesday (June 26) afternoon. Senior
Ben Kaplin (Louisville, Ky./Ballard) was honored as the top defensive catcher in NCAA Division III Region 7.
Kaplin claimed the award as he had nearly a perfect season as the Etta Express backstop. He posted a .997 fielding percentage this season, committing only one error in 321 total chances. Kaplin also threw out over half of the runners that tried to steal a base on him, catching 15 out 29 would-be base stealers.
Kaplin was also named to the All-Ohio Athletic Conference second team this year as he also performed well offensively, recording a batting average of .322 and collecting two home runs and 13 doubles for the year. He also drove in 43 runs, fourth best in the OAC.
The Etta Express went 24-19 on the season, narrowly missing out on a chance to advance to the NCAA Regionals. After fighting hard to make it to the OAC Championship, Marietta dropped the elimination game to Baldwin Wallace by the score of 6-5.
