MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College men's lacrosse team returned home to face a very tough Wittenberg University squad and lost 14-5 Saturday (Mar. 16) evening. With the win, the Pioneers fall to 3-3 overall and with the win the Tiger improve fall to 4-0 overall.
The Tigers struck first in the opening period as they got a goal from Blake Roller to take a 1-0 lead. Josh Walter tied it up at the 9:00 mark but Wittenberg answered immediately with a goal from Kyle Gould. The Tiger were able to tack on two more scores led 4-1 going into the second period.
Marietta began the second period with a man-advantage and was able to benefit from it as
Tyler Reich (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin) scored to cut the lead in half. Wittenberg extended the lead over the next seven minutes as Nathan Brown, Roller, and Dillon McKeigue all scored, giving the Tigers a 7-2 lead, and that was the lead going into intermission.
The Pioneers fell further behind as the Tigers got quick goals from Ethan Pac and Brown to begin the third quarter.
Chase Franklin (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) tried to slow the momentum and fired in a pair of scores to cut the lead to five. Later in the period, after Wittenberg extended the lead back out to seven, Franklin scored again off of an assist from
Thomas Zerman (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville South). The Pioneers entered the fourth quarter with a 11-5 deficit.
The Pioneers were shut out in the final period and fell to the Tigers, 14-5.
Ben Millard (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) got the start for the Pioneers and played the first half in the net. He faced 28 shots, 18 of which were on goal and had seven saves.
James Cipollone (Forest Hill, Md./Calvert Hall) played the second half and faced 20 shots, 14on goal, and made seven saves.
Franklin led the Pioneers with three goals.
Marietta will return to the field Wednesday (Mar. 20) when they host Saint Vincent College, with the game scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
