MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College men's lacrosse team took to the road and dominated throughout the evening, coming away with a great 20-2 victory over Washington and Jefferson College, on Wednesday (Mar. 13) evening. With the win, the Pioneers improve to 3-2 overall and with the loss the Presidents fall to 1-4 overall.
The game started as a defensive battle as no team could find the net for the better part of the first period, but Marietta closed the quarter with a pair of scores from
Chase Franklin (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) and the Pioneers led 2-0 going into the second period.
Marietta broke through with 10 scores during the second to blow the game wide open. Washington and Jefferson actually scored first as Zach Mey found the net for the Presidents just two minutes in.
Tyler Reich (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin) answered with a pair of Pioneer goals over the next minute, and after another Franklin score,
Nick Bender (Oakdale, Pa./South Fayette) scored to put Marietta up 6-1 at the 9:32 mark. Later in the period, Franklin scored another pair of goals and
Nate Neal (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) punched a in score to give Marietta an eight-goal lead with less than five minutes. Marietta closed out the period with a score from
Tommy Imhof (Wooster, Ohio/Wooster) and another goal apiece from Neal and Franklin and took a 12-1 lead into intermission.
The Pioneers added another five goals in the third period and the Presidents could only answer with one of their own. The Pioneers entered the fourth quarter with a 17-2 lead.
The Pioneers shut out Washington and Jefferson in the final period and added another three scores to secure the 20-2 victory.
Ben Millard (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) got the start for the Pioneers and played the first half in the net. He faced seven shots, four of which were on goal and had three saves.
James Cipollone (Forest Hill, Md./Calvert Hall) played the second half and faced seven shots, four on goal, and made three saves.
Franklin tied a school record with eight goals and 11 points during the game. Neal tacked on five goals and led the Pioneers with 14 groundballs and won 15 of 17 faceoffs. Defensively,
Carson Meckler (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) led with three caused turnovers and
Barrett Lindell (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mariemont) had two caused turnovers and picked up five groundballs.
Marietta will return to the field Saturday (Mar. 16) when they host Wittenberg University, with the game scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
