Track opens season with annual First Glimpse Meet

MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College hosted its annual First Glimpse Track Meet Saturday (Dec. 7) afternoon in the Dyson Baudo Recreation Center. The Pioneer men placed first out of five teams, while women finished third out of four teams.
 
Freshman Gunner Fertig (Eleanor, W.Va.) had an impressive collegiate debut winning two events and scoring in two others. Fertig won the high jump with a height of 1.80 meters (5' 10.75") and the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.69 seconds. He placed third in the pole vault with a height of 3.95 meters (12' 11.5") and seventh in 200-meter dash crossing the line in 25.93 seconds. All Fertig's marks were personal bests.
 
Fellow freshman Sage Landis (Friendly, W.Va.) won the pole vault with a height of 4.40 meters (14' 5.25") and the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.36 seconds, both personal best marks.
 
Four other Pioneers notched event wins for the men. Vante' Hodges (Horn Lake, Miss./Horn Lake) won the 55-meter dash in 6.67 seconds. Max King (Granville, Ohio/Granville) posted a time of 53.97 seconds to win the 400-meter dash.  In the field events, Andrew Frannchini won the weight throw with a personal best distance of 13.56 meters (44' 6.0") and Wade Chuich (Marietta, Ohio/John Glenn) won the shot put with a mark of 12.38 meters (40' 7.5").
 
The Pioneer pole vault crew dominated the meet. In addition to Landis's win, Marietta had the top five finishers. Cael McCutcheon (Point Pleasant, W.Va./Point Pleasant) was second with a height of 4.10 meters (13' 5.5"), Fertig was third, Michael Tolliver (Thornville, Ohio) placed fourth with a personal best height of 3.95 meters (12' 11.5"), and Cooper Warren (Logan, Ohio) was fifth with a personal best height of 3.65 meters (11' 11.75").
 
Scoring points in the meet for Marietta was Matthew Siegler (Hamilton, Ohio/Badin) with a third place showing in the long jump. His mark was a personal best distance of 6.35 meters (20' 10.0"). Chuich was third in the weight throw with a mark of 11.38 meters (37' 4.0"). Evan Fee (Newark, Ohio/Licking Valley) took second in both the weight throw (11.65 meters / 38' 3.0") and the shot put (11.12 meters / 36' 5.75").
 
Scoring in the running events were Kevin Hernandez (Plymouth, Ohio/Willard) (5:02.32) was eighth with a personal best time in the mile run. Warren (7.20 seconds) posted a personal best in the 55-meter dash finishing seventh. Luke Price (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) (55.39 seconds) was third in the 400-meter dash. Matthew Fehrman (Newark, Ohio/Licking Valley) (2:13.45) set a personal best placing second in the 800-meter run. Logan Falls (Parkersburg, W.Va./) (27.41 seconds) set a personal best in the 200-meter dash placing eighth.
 
The Pioneer women had three event winners, all with personal best showings.  Audrey Helmick (Berkeley Springs, W.Va./Berkeley Springs) won the mile run with a time of 5:47.65. Sadie Gray (Whipple, Ohio) took top honors in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.59 seconds and Michaela Hieronymus (Letart, W.Va./Wahama) was first in the 600-meter run with a time of 1:44:09. Rami Padilla (St. Clairsville, Ohio/) (6:50.80) placed eighth in the mile run.
 
Other personal best performances included Emily Randulic (Quaker City, Ohio/Buckeye Trail) (2.60 meters / 8' 6.25") placed second in the pole vault. Gray (4.76 meters / 15' 7.5") was sixth in the long jump and third (28.41 seconds) in the 200-meter dash.
 
Emma Fehrman (Newark, Ohio/Licking Valley) turned in a pair of second place showings. She had a mark of 5.06 meters (16' 7.25") in the long jump and crossed the line in 28.32 seconds in the 200-meter dash. Isabelle Poling (Lancaster, Ohio/Bloom Carroll) finished second in the 3000-meter run with a time of 11:36.69. Mackenzie Moran (Tallmadge, Ohio/Tallmadge) was second in the mile run with a time of 6:16.76.
 
Other scorers for the Pioneers included Hope Adams (Delaware, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) with a fourth-place finish (29.06 seconds) in the 200-meter dash and a sixth-place finish (8.00 seconds) in the 55-meter dash. Elizabeth Schnegg (Clarington, Ohio/St. John Central) placed fifth in the shot put with a mark of 8.54 meters (28' 0.25").
 
Marietta is back in action at the Marshall Alumni Classic on Saturday (Jan. 11).
