ADA, Ohio – The Marietta College women's soccer team kicked off their Ohio Athletic Conference schedule with a road matchup against Ohio Northern University on Saturday (Oct. 5) afternoon. The Polar Bears jumped out to a quick lead and did not let up, defeating the Pioneers 5-1. The loss drops the Pioneers to 4-4-2 and 0-1-0 in the OAC. With the win, ONU improves to 5-4-1 record, 1-0-0 in the OAC.
The Polar Bears got the first score on the board as they found the net in the 7th minute of the match. Elizabeth Pierce fired a shot that slipped by Pioneer goalkeeper
Maisee Carrier (Fairview, Pa./Fairview) to give ONU the early lead. Two minutes later, Jill Roberts scored an unassisted goal and the Polar Bears were in control.
Ohio Northern extended the lead in the 17th minute as Alyssa Beckett scored off of an assist by Kylie Cabana, but the Pioneers were finally able to answer.
Angelene Kontul (Solon, Ohio/Solon) fired a shot into the back of the net, cutting the lead back to two goals. Neither team attempted a shot for the remainder of the half and the Polar Bears took a 3-1 lead into the intermission.
Marietta was limited to one total shot in the second half but Ohio Northern tacked on two insurance goals in the 53rd and 68th minutes, extending the lead and eventually cruising to a 5-1 victory.
Carrier played all 90 minutes in the nets for the Pioneersand faced 18 shots, 10 of which were on goal, and made five saves in the game.
The Pioneers will next be in action this Wednesday (Oct. 9) as they return home to battle Otterbein University. Their OAC home opener is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
