MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College battled Baldwin Wallace University to a 1-1 tie Saturday (Oct. 26) evening in Ohio Athletic Conference men's soccer action. The Pioneers move to 5-9-2 overall and 2-4-1 in the OAC. Baldwin Wallace is 6-8-4 on the season and 1-5-1 in the OAC.
"We rue the day when we don't take our chances. We had three solid opportunities to extend the lead to two and we didn't do it," Marietta head coach
Joe Bergin said. "That cost us in this game. This tie didn't help either team and that's frustrating."
Marietta grabbed the lead in the 38th minute. Baldwin Wallace turned the ball over in its own defensive third giving
Petar Mijic-Barisic (Kirtland, Ohio/Kirtland) a breakaway one-on-one with the Yellow Jacket keeper. Mijic-Barisic dribbled to the top of the 18-yard box and slotted the ball inside the right post for the goal.
The Pioneers had several opportunities early in the second half to double its lead. Three times Marietta created breakaway scoring chances but couldn't get the shot on target.
Baldwin Wallace leveled the match in the 76th minute off a corner kick. The Yellow Jackets sent the ball into the box where Alan Beaney chested the ball to Max Yakym who got a foot on the ball deflecting it into the goal.
Joe Backhaus went the distance in goal for Marietta. He posted four saves in the match. Diego Teran had four saves for the Yellow Jackets.
Marietta travels to Mount Union on Wednesday (Oct. 30) for a 7:00 p.m. match.
