ALLIANCE, Ohio — The Marietta College men's soccer team lost to the University of Mount Union by the score of 3-1 Wednesday (Oct. 30) evening. The Pioneers fall to 5-10-2 overall and 2-5-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Mount Union improves to 13-4-1 on the season and 7-1-0 in the OAC.
"The boys gave us all they could tonight. When we pulled a goal back to make it 2-1 it was game on. But we just couldn't get it done. No fault on the effort," Marietta head coach
Joe Bergin said. "The playoff hopes died tonight and we need to learn from it. We left too many points on the table to make it happen. We have one more game for the seniors on Saturday and we will give all we have."
Mount Union scored a pair of first half goals. Amir Spratt got the Purple Raiders on the board in the 31st minute with an assist from Reese Utter. Luka Dedic doubled the lead in the 42nd minute with an assist from Nyiles Spann.
Gavin Heighberger (Lagrange, Ohio/Elyria) got the Pioneers within striking distance.
Sam Holthaus (Columbus, Ohio/University) picked up the assist on Heighberger's goal in the 73rd minute.
The Purple Raiders wasted little time in reclaiming their two-goal lead. Five minutes later Jordan Akins found the back of the net in the 78th minute. Emilio Spetic had the assist.
Lucas Fields went the distance in goal for Mount Union recording a pair of saves in the victory.
Joey Backhaus (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) had eight saves in goal for the Pioneers.
Marietta returns home to close out the season. Wilmington College visits Marietta Field on Saturday (Nov. 2) for Senior Day. Kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m.
