NEW CONCORD, Ohio – The Marietta College women's soccer team took a first half deficit into the intermission, but controlled the final 45 minutes, scoring two goals and defeating Muskingum University, 2-1, on Wednesday (Oct. 23) evening. With the win the Pioneers are now 6-6-3 overall and 2-3-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference and with the loss the Fighting Muskies fall to 3-10-1 overall and 0-5-1 in OAC action.
"We know we can be more clinical, but we're creating tons of opportunities," said Marietta head coach
Zack Votra. "Proud of the team for making some quick adjustments at half time and battling back."
Marietta had a very active first half as they fired off 13 shots, seven of which had to be stopped by starting Muskie goalkeeper Gracyn Armstrong, but could not put a tally on the scoreboard. Despite getting out shot, Muskingum got on the board in the 41st minute. Hannah Ritchie sent a corner kick into the box and Madison Yenke sent a header towards the goal. The shot ricocheted off of the face of Pioneer keeper
Maisee Carrier (Fairview, Pa./Fairview) and found its way into the net to give Muskingum the lead. Marietta could not answer and trailed 1-0 going into the intermission.
The second half got off to a quiet start but Marietta finally was able to get back into the game. The Pioneers got on the board in the 61st minute when
Emma Egli (Homeworth, Ohio/West Branch) took a pass from
Izzy Hank (North Olmsted, Ohio/Holy Name) and deposited it in the net, tying the contest at one. Just 10 seconds of game play elapsed when Egli again fired another shot into the net and the Pioneers now found themselves with a 2-1 lead. The Pioneer defense kept the Muskingum scoring opportunities to a minimum for the remainder of the period and, in the end, claimed a 2-1 conference victory.
Carrier played all 90 minutes in goal, she faced eight shots, four of which were on goal, and made three saves.
Marietta will next play on Saturday (Oct. 26) when they travel to battle Baldwin Wallace University, with kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m.
