MARIETTA, Ohio – After giving up a first half goal, the Marietta College women's soccer team scored early in the second only to be quickly answered, eventually dropping a conference matchup to Heidelberg University, 2-1, on Saturday (Oct. 12) afternoon. With the loss the Pioneers fall to 5-5-2 overall and 1-2 in the Ohio Athletic Conference and with the win the Student Princes improve to 8-1-3 overall and 1-0-3 in OAC play.
The team also celebrated Senior day during the afternoon and honored eight young ladies who have been a big part of the program over the past four years.
Taylor Sloan (Belpre, Ohio/Warren),
Emma Egli (Homeworth, Ohio/West Branch), Ali Stahl, Ryan Haidar,
Kayla Stischok (Columbus, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson),
Angelene Kontul (Solon, Ohio/Solon), Emma Kronenbitter, and
Izzy Hank (North Olmsted, Ohio/Holy Name) were all recognized in a Senior Day ceremony prior to the match.
Heidelberg quickly got on the board in the seventh minute as Syd Hewer blasted in a goal off of an Ella Jacobs assist and took a 1-0 lead. The Pioneers had opportunities all throughout the period, sending five shots toward Student Prince goalkeeper Bridget Enright, but could not even the score. Marietta outshot Heidelberg 7-4 in the first half, but still trailed 1-0 going into the intermission.
The second half started quietly but Marietta was able to finally answer with a score in the 54th minute.
Taylor Sloan (Belpre, Ohio/Warren) took a great
Mallory Sullivan (Canal Winchester, Ohio/Canal Winchester) pass and deposited the ball into the back of the net to tie the score up at 1-all. Heidelberg responded just five minutes later as Brianna Braatz used an assist from Viviana Palmer and got a shot by Pioneer keeper
Sarah Legg (Edgewood, Ky./Dixie Heights) giving them back the lead. The Pioneers only had two more chances, but both shots were saved and Heidelberg would hold on for a 2-1 victory.
Legg played all 90 minutes in net for Marietta and faced 11 shots, and collected two saves.
The Pioneers will return to the field Wednesday (Oct. 16) when they travel to battle Capital University, with the game scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
