Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women’s Soccer loses on the road to #1 Carnegie Mellon

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Marietta College women's soccer team had a tough assignment as they faced the number one team in the country and was defeated by Carnegie Mellon University, 5-0, on Wednesday (Sept. 27) evening.  With the win the Tartans improve to 10-0 on the season, and with the loss the Pioneers are now 3-4 overall.

"They're the number one team in the country for a reason," said Marietta Head Women's Soccer coach Zack Votra. "I'm beyond proud of our group. We were organized and intelligent. To only give up one goal through the run of play to a team like that is incredibly difficult and that's what we did today."

Marietta tried to play a defensive first half as they did not attempt a shot in the first 45 minutes.  The Tartans scored early in the match as Cecelia Dieterich scored in the seventh minute, assisted by Caitlynn Owens and Alana Frederick.  The Pioneers were able to keep Carnegie Mellon off the board for nearly the remainder of the period, but the Tartans found the net one more time in the half.  In the 38th minute, Carnegie Mellon sent a corner kick into the box and Natalie Rayce eventually booted the ball into the goal to give Carnegie Mellon a 2-0 lead.   The Tartans would go into the intermission with that 2-0 lead.

The Pioneers were out shot in the first half, 10-0, with six of the Tartan shots on goal.  Carnegie Mellon also won the corner kick battle, 7-0 in the opening half.

The Tartans got on the board in the 59th minute of the match when Jenna Hallback scored.  Rayce scored her second goal 15 minutes later and the Tartans would add one more late goal, cruising to a 5-0 victory.

Sarah Legg (Edgewood, Ky./Dixie Heights) played all 90 minutes in goal for Marietta, she faced 13 shots on goal, and made eight saves in the match.

The Pioneers will return to the field Saturday (Sept. 30) when they travel to take on Baldwin Wallace University to open their conference schedule.
