Women’s Soccer delivers an explosive victory over Geneva

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Marietta College women's soccer team earned an exciting 5-1 road victory over Geneva College on Saturday (Sept. 16) evening.  With the win the Pioneers are now 3-2 overall and with the loss Geneva falls to 1-3-1 overall.

"We did a lot of digging this week." said Head Coach Zack Votra.   "We had tons of motivation for this match, both intrinsic and extrinsic. This group deserved this fantastic result!"

Both teams battled to a 1-1 tie in the first half.  The Golden Tornados wasted no time at all getting on the board, scoring in the second minute of the game.  Saige Musser sent a shot past starting Pioneer goalkeeper Sarah Legg (Edgewood, Ky./Dixie Heights) and Geneva led, 1-0.  Marietta tied up the contest in the 19th minute as Emma Egli (Homeworth, Ohio/West Branch) took a perfect Angelene Kontul (Solon, Ohio/Solon) pass and sent it to the back of the Geneva net.  No other offense happened in the remaining part of the period and both teams took a 1-1 tie into intermission.

After both teams battled back in forth for the first 20 minutes of the second half, Marietta exploded for four goals in three minutes.  Marietta broke the tie in the 67th minute on a goal from Demi Mills (Batavia, Ohio/West Clermont), assisted by Mallory Sullivan (Canal Winchester, Ohio/Canal Winchester).  One minute later, Sullivan scored unassisted to give Marietta a 3-1 lead.  Sullivan then assisted Ryah Haidar (Sylvania, Ohio/Sylvania Southview) just one minute later to give the Pioneers some insurance. Finally, Kontul scored seconds later and the Pioneers did not look back, finishing with a 5-1 blowout victory.

Legg worked the first half in goal and faced 6 shots, giving up the only goal against the Pioneers.  Alli Stahl (Batavia, Ohio/West Clermont) came in to play the second half.  She faced 11 shots, five of which were on goal, and made five saves.

Marietta will return to the field on Saturday (Sept. 23) when they travel to take on Kenyon College, with kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m.
