HIRAM, Ohio — Marietta College split a nonconference softball doubleheader at Hiram College Monday (April 10) afternoon. The Terriers won game one, 6-2, and Marietta took game two, 4-2. The Pioneers are now 15-7 overall, while Hiram moves to 12-8 on the season.
Hiram scored twice in the first inning and added four more runs in the third to build a 6-0 lead in the first game. Megan Moser got the Terriers on the board with an RBI single to center field. Darian Kanno followed with a single to right center making it 2-0.
The Terriers strung together five straight hits in the bottom of the third inning. Angel Santellan, Larissa Baeza, and Victoria Garcia all drove in runs with singles.
Marietta plated two runs in the top of the sixth.
Jillian Middleton (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) led off with a double and was lifted for pinch runner,
Jillian Strecansky (Columbiana, Ohio/South Range). A ground out moved Strecansky to third. Taylor walked and then Hayley Mott singled to center field scoring Strecansky.
Katy Story (Billings, Mont./Skyview) pinch hit and earned a walk loading the bases.
Micaela Bradley (Greenup, Ill./Cumberland) pinch hit for
Amelia Timko (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) and worked a free pass scoring Airy for a 6-2 Terrier lead.
Trinity Meza (3-3) started in the circle for Hiram and got the win working 5.1 innings. She allowed two runs on six hits with five walks and two strikeouts. Jeskari Rodriguez pitched the final 1.2 innings for the save. She did not allow a hit and walked one.
Rachel Kazmirski (Colliers, W.Va./Brooke) (1-3) started and took the loss for Marietta. She was charged with two runs on two hits in 2.0 innings. Kazmirski walked one and struck out two. Timko worked 3.0 innings and gave up four runs on six hits with two strikeouts.
Breanna Zirkle (Pomeroy, Ohio/Meigs) threw 1.0 inning and allowed one hit.
Middleton and Mott each had two hits for the Pioneers.
In game two, Marietta struck for three runs in the third inning. Mott delivered a two-out, two-run single driving in Marietta's final two runs of the game. Kazmirski smacked an RBI double earlier in the inning.
Kazmirski led off the game with a walk and was sacrificed to second by Airy. Middleton singled and then a sac fly from
Jess Brown (Brookville, Ohio/Brookville) plated Kazmirski.
Hiram scored one run in the first and sixth innings.
Middleton (9-3) started in the circle and got the win pitching 5.2 innings and allowing two runs on six hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Zirkle earned her first save of the season throwing 1.1 innings and allowing one base hit.
Ryan Leto (0-2) went the distance for Hiram in the losing effort. She was charged with four runs, three earned, on seven hits with four walks and three strikeouts.
Mott was the lone Pioneer with two hits in the game. Kazmirski and Airy each had a double.
Marietta travels to Westerville on Wednesday (April 12) for an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader at Otterbein University. Game one is set for a 3:00 p.m. first pitch.
