Marietta and Otterbein split OAC Softball doubleheader

WESTERVILLE, Ohio — Marietta College and Otterbein University split an Ohio Athletic Conference softball doubleheader Wednesday (April 12) afternoon. The Cardinals won game one, 5-1, and the Pioneers took the night cap, 9-1, in five innings.

Otterbein scored a run in each of the first three innings and then added a pair of insurance runs in the fifth inning for the game one victory. Caroline Heller drove in runs in the first and third innings for the Cardinals, while Caitlin Wilkins smacked an RBI double in the bottom of the second.

Marietta's lone run came in the second inning. Jillian Middelton led off with a single to left center and moved to third base on a single from Jess Brown (Brookville, Ohio/Brookville). Haylee Mott (Kinsman, Ohio/Badger) plated Middleton with a sac fly.

Bryn Grabowski (7-4) went the distance in the circle for Otterbein. She allowed one run on seven hits with one walk and five strikeouts in 7.0 innings.

Rachel kazmirski (1-4) started and took the loss for Marietta. She was charged with two runs on one hit with three walks and one strikeout. Amelia Timko (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) threw 2.1 innings of middle relief and allowed one run on three hits. Breanna Zirkle (Pomeroy, Ohio/Meigs) gave up two runs on four hits in 2.0 innings of work.

Brown and Taylor Watts (Galloway, Ohio/West Jefferson) each had two hits in the game for Marietta.

The Pioneers scored four runs in the top of the first inning of game two and never looked back earning a five-inning, run rule victory. The big blow was a three-run home run from Brown. Middleton knocked in a run with an RBI double right before Brown went deep.

Marietta took advantage of three Otterbein errors to score five runs in the top of fifth inning for a 9-0 lead. Kazmirski lined a two-run double to left and Brown picked up her fourth RBI of the game with a single to left.

Otterbein's lone run came on a solo home run off the bat of Sage Jenkins in the bottom of the fifth.
