HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. — The Marietta College women's tennis team defeated Gordon College by the score of 5-4 Thursday (March 9) morning for their first win of the young season. The Pioneers improve to 1-3 overall, while Gordon falls to 4-11 on the season.
The Pioneers took two of the three doubles matches for the early lead. In the top spot,
Ryah Haidar (Sylvania, Ohio/Sylvania Southview) and
Isabela Paixao (McKees Rocks, Pa./Montour) beat Carolina Helmer and Annette Kim, 8-5. In the third doubles match,
India Flores (Waverly, W.Va./Williamstown) and
Elizabeth Vigue (Lancaster, Ohio/Fisher Catholic) posted an 8-2 win over Allyson Fournier and Joey Keltner.
The Fight Scots stayed close with a victory at No. 2 doubles. Abbigail Fournier and Kristen Kendall took down Abigail Hartshorn and
Parkar Mauk (Marion, Ohio/Marion Harding), 8-4.
Paixo remained undefeated in singles play with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Kim at No. 1 singles. Haider best Helmer at No. 3, 6-3, 1-6, 1-0 (10-3), while Vigue secured Marietta's other point with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Amanda Moraes at No. 6 singles.
Abbigail Fournier topped Flores at No. 2, 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-7). Hannah Hovda got past Mauk at No. 4, 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-7). While Kendall downed Hartshorn at No. 5, 6-1 and 6-1.
Marietta returns home to host Salem University on Wednesday (March 15) at 2:30 p.m.
