HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. — The Marietta College men's tennis team defeated Thomas College by the score of 6-3 Wednesday (March 8) afternoon. The Pioneers improve to 3-2 on the season, while Thomas falls to 0-3 overall.
The Pioneers jumped out to an early 2-1 lead after doubles.
Evan Barker (Washington, W.Va./Parkersburg South) and
Elijah Kuhl (Marietta, Ohio/Wood County Christian (W.Va.)) beat Jose Afonso and Nicolas Arenas at No. 1, 8-4, while
Elliot Britton (High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire/John Hampden Grammar) and
George Fazah (Beirut, Lebanon/Adma International School) took down Caleb Daigneault and Kegan Rodrigue at No. 3 by the score of 8-6.
Thomas got on the board with a win at No. 2 doubles. Liam Gould and Gabriel McPhail bested Spencer hall and
Elivh Perez (Mexico City, Mexico/Preparatoria Abierta), 8-5.
Thomas's other two points came at Nos. 1 and 6 singles. Arenas slipped past Perez in the top spot by the scores of 6-2 and 6-3. At No. 6, Daigneault edged Fazah, 7-5 and 7-6 (10-8).
Marietta won the middle four singles matches. Kuhl defeated Afonso at No. 2, 7-5 and 6-1. Barker beat Gould at No. 3, 6-1 and 6-3. Hall downed McPhail at No. 4, 6-0 and 6-1, while Britton topped Rodrigue at No. 5, 6-3 and 6-3.
Marietta closes out its Hilton Head matches on Thursday (March 9) with a 9:00 a.m. match against Gordon College.
