LIMA, Ohio — The Marietta College women's tennis team lost to Ohio Northern University by the score of 8-1 Saturday (March 25) afternoon. The loss drops Marietta to 1-7 overall and 0-2 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. The Polar Bears improve to 9-3 on the season and 1-0 in the OAC.
Ohio Northern jumped out to a 3-0 lead after sweeping the doubles matches. In the top spot, Jenna Bell and Abby Cruser downed
Ryah Haidar (Sylvania, Ohio/Sylvania Southview) and
Isabela Paixao (McKees Rocks, Pa./Montour), 8-4. At No. 2, Abigail Hartshorn and
Parkar Mauk (Marion, Ohio/Marion Harding) lost to Flo Sanchez and Julianne Sheldon, 8-1. In the No. 3 match, Jamie Hurst and Cassie Stuber beat
India Flores (Waverly, W.Va./Williamstown) and
Elizabeth Vigue (Lancaster, Ohio/Fisher Catholic), 8-0.
Paixao claimed the Pioneers' lone point with a win at No. 1 singles. Paixao topped Cruser, 6-4 and 7-5.
The Polar Bears posted straight set wins at Nos. 2-4. Hurst beat Hartshorn at No. 2, 6-0 and 6-0. Flores lost to Regan Landis at No. 3, 6-1 and 6-0, while Olivia Kesner downed Haidar at No. 4, 6-1 and 6-0.
Mauk gave Victoria Santana all she could handle before falling at No. 5. Mauk won the first set, 6-3. Santana took the second, 6-2, forcing a third set. Sanatana won the third 10-4 to win the match.
In the final singles match, Marisa Petrunich downed Vigue at No. 6, 6-1 and 6-2.
Marietta hosts Baldwin Wallace next Saturday (April 1) at 1:00 p.m.
