FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Marietta College women's lacrosse team took to the road for a late spring break game and fell to Methodist University, 18-8, on Friday (March 10) afternoon. With the loss the Pioneers fall to 3-2 overall and with the win the Monarchs improve to 5-1.
Methodist got on the board in the first two minutes into the match when Makayla Ramos found the net. Marietta's
Kayla Godwin (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington Central) tied it up one minute later when she took a great
Megan McGriff (Lakewood, Colo./Bear Creek) pass and deposited it in the goal. That would be the final offense generated by the Pioneers for the period, but Methodist would extend the lead to 7-1 before the horn sounded. The Monarchs' Layla Weisenfeld fueled the run scoring three of those goals.
Marietta kept the Methodist offense off the board for the first five minutes of the second period and managed to find the net as McGriff scored at the 10:52 mark, off a Wiles assist. The Monarchs scored a pair of quick tallies and extended the lead to 9-2 with seven minutes left in the half. Marietta attempted to put a halt on the Methodist surge as
Sophia Verona (Shinnston, W. Wa./Our Lady of Victory) scored with less than two minutes left, but the Monarchs managed to score twice more and took an 11-3 lead into intermission.
The third quarter saw Methodist continue their scoring in the opening minute as Peyton Jones scored. Four minutes of game time elapsed and Paige Adams was finally able to score her first goal of the match, but that would be the last Pioneer goal scored in the period. Methodist would tack on four more goals and take a commanding 16-4 lead into period four.
With a running clock in place, the Pioneers got a little offense back in the fourth period.
Jordan Jeffries (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Polytechnic) broke free and scored her first goal of the season at the 9:28 mark.
Lindy Brobeck (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington) cut the lead to 10 as she scored two minutes later.
Casey Roeder (Milford, Ohio/Milford) scored off of a great Wiles pass to get the lead back to single digits with less than four minutes remaining. Methodist scored twice more as Payton Jones found the net both times.
Kyla Andreas (Shirley, N.Y./Longwood) added one last score, but the Pioneers would fall to the Monarchs, 18-8.
Abby May (Randolph, Ohio/St. Vincent-St. Mary) got the start in the net for the Pioneers and played all 60 minutes. She faced 33 shots, 29 of which were on goal. She had 11 saves in the match.
Eight different Pioneers scored in the game. Wiles and McGriff poster two assists apiece
Marley Phillipe and
Kayla Kearns (Preston, Md./Easton) each caused one turnover.
Alayna Francis (Irwin, Pa./Norwin) led the team with five draw controls and tied with Andreas picking up three groundballs.
The Pioneers will return home Wednesday (March 15) when they host the College of Wooster, with a start time of 6 p.m.
