Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Women’s Lacrosse defeated by College of Wooster

MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College women's lacrosse team was defeated by the College of Wooster, 19-5, on Wednesday (March 15) evening on Marietta Field.  The win improves the Fighting Scots to 5-0, and with the loss the Pioneers are now 3-3.

"Despite the score, we got a lot out of tonight," said Head Coach Malory Nadrah.  "We knew what Wooster was capable of. The team had an amazing first quarter that shows so much potential for this group. There were a lot of great defensive plays and transitions. I am proud of the relentless hustle our players displayed."

The Fighting Scots got off to a quick start scoring two goals in the first three minutes of the game.  Marietta played lockdown defense for the remainder of the quarter and finally got on the board when Hope Adams (Delaware, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) knifed through the Wooster defense and scored an unassisted goal.  Adams then found Megan McGriff (Lakewood, Colo./Bear Creek) with a pinpoint pass in the final minute of the period, and McGriff cashed in.  The goal tied the game at two going into the second quarter.

Wooster opened it up in the second period as they found the net seven times.  Kenzie Morris scored one of her six goals on the evening at the 12:03 mark, putting the Scots back into the lead.  Still the Pioneers were able to keep it close until Anna Truong scored with less than six minutes, putting the score at 4-2.  The Fighting Scots would go on to score five more goals to take a 9-2 lead into halftime.

Wooster would extend the lead to 10 as they put up the first three goals of the third quarter.  The Pioneers would get back on the board as Maggie Downard (Canal Fulton, Ohio/Jackson) scored off of a Kayla Godwin (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington Central) assist.  Adams tacked on another goal when she scored from a free position shot with 3:05 remaining, but the Pioneers were still down by ten, 14-4 going into the final period.

The Fighting Scots and Pioneers played most of the quarter with a running clock, extending the lead to 18-5.  Renee Mulvaney (Midland, Mich./Midland) broke free and scored off of a McGriff assist in the closing minutes.  Wooster scored one last goal with seconds left on the clock, and won 19-5.

Abby May (Randolph, Ohio/St. Vincent-St. Mary) played in the net for all 60 minutes.  She faced 35 shots, 28 of which were on goal, and made nine saves.

Marietta was led by Adams with two goals and an assist in the game.  She also led the Pioneers with four draw controls.  Mulvaney, Downard, and McGriff all contributed a goal apiece.  Kyla Andreas (Shirley, N.Y./Longwood) led with four groundballs.

"We plan to learn from tonight and continue to develop as a team for the rest of our non-conference slate of games," concluded Coach Nadrah.

Marietta will return to the field Saturday (March 18) when they travel to Chatham University, with the game scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
