MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College women's lacrosse team was victorious in their home opener as they defeated Saint Vincent College 15-4 on Sunday (Feb. 26) afternoon. With the win the Pioneers improved to 2-0 overall and the Bearcats fell to 0-1.
"Awesome team win! Defense stuck to our game plan and held a very talented SVU offense to limited production", said Head Coach
Malory Nadrah. "Abby had another great day for us. Mal and Hope did a great job scoring to help restore our momentum when we needed it. Everyone on and off the field contributed to us being successful today."
Marietta stormed out to big lead in the first quarter.
Lindy Brobeck (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington) got the first Pioneer goal just two minutes into the contest.
Hope Adams (Delaware, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) tacked on two goals and freshman
Mallory Wiles (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) scored three goals during the high-powered first period. Saint Vincent was able to score with a minute left to make the score 6-2 after one period. The action in the second period was not as frenetic, but Adams found the net twice more and Marietta led at the half, 8-2.
Another Pioneer newcomer
Kayla Godwin (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington Central) made her presence in the felt as she scored at the 10:38 mark of the 3rd period. Wiles put another score up and Marietta held a 10-3 lead going into the final period. Marietta closed out the game with five 4th quarter goals and cruised to a 15-4 victory.
Abby May (Randolph, Ohio/St. Vincent-St. Mary) spent all 60 minutes in the nets and earned the win for the Pioneers. She faced 21 total shots, 15 of which were on goal, and made 11 saves in the game. She was credited with the win.
Wiles and Adams led the Pioneers with five goals apiece and Godwin added two goals for the game.
Alayna Francis (Irwin, Pa./Norwin) led the Pioneers in draw controls with three.
The Pioneers will next play Wednesday (March 1) when they travel to take on Washington and Jefferson College, with the game scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
