WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Marietta College women's lacrosse team was defeated by Washington and Jefferson College, 17-7, on Wednesday (March 1) evening. The win improves the Presidents to 1-1, and with the loss the Pioneers are now 2-1.
"We're disappointed. We had a strong first quarter then the game got away from us," said Head Coach
Malory Nadrah. "Without draw possessions we played a lot of defense against a very talented attack. We're frustrated at the final delta of the game. But our 4th quarter was a great highlight, a lot of our younger defensive players came off the bench with fight and grit to end on a high note. Abby stayed resilient and made amazing saves."
Washington and Jefferson put the first two tallies on the board to rush out to the lead, but the Pioneers answered with goals from
Hope Adams (Delaware, Ohio/Bishop Watterson),
Megan McGriff (Lakewood, Colo./Bear Creek), and
Mallory Wiles (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) and led 3-2 with seven minutes left in the first period. W&J tied it in the closing seconds, putting the score at 3 all going into the second quarter.
Adams and Wiles found the net once again for the Pioneers to begin the second period, but the Presidents answered. W&J rocketed seven of the next eight goals scored into the net and sped out to a 10-6 lead going into the half.
The Presidents broke it open in the third period, adding five more goals and shutting the Pioneers out for the whole 15 minutes. Adams tacked on one more goal in the fourth but the difference was too much to overcome. The Presidents scored the final two goals and cruised to a 17-7 victory.
Abby May (Randolph, Ohio/St. Vincent-St. Mary) got the start in net for the Pioneers and played all 60 minutes. She faced 36 shots, 32 of which were on goal, and made 15 saves.
Marietta was led by Adams and Wiles as each had a trio of goals in the game. McGriff scored the other goal in the game.
Alayna Francis (Irwin, Pa./Norwin) led the Pioneers in draw controls with four. Francis also tied with
Kayla Kearns (Preston, Md./Easton) with two caused turnovers, and Kearns picked up three groundballs
Marietta will return to the field Saturday (March 4) when they return home to face Bethany College, with the game scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
