Women’s Soccer battles Muskingum to a draw on the road

NEW CONCORD, Ohio – The Marietta College women's soccer team finished their month-long road trip with a 1-1 tie with Muskingum University on Wednesday (Oct. 4) evening.  With the tie the Pioneers are now 3-5-1 overall and 0-1-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference and with the tie the Fighting Muskies fall to 2-6-3 overall and 0-1-1 in OAC action.

"It's hard to process the result we got today," said Marietta junior defender Izzy Hank (North Olmsted, Ohio/Holy Name).  "I am proud of how my team outplayed and dominated; we just need to take this as an opportunity to learn from our mistakes."

Marietta opened the proceedings with two early shots on goal.  Lydia Vach (Maineville, Ohio/Little Miami) and Angelene Kontul (Solon, Ohio/Solon) tested Muskie goalkeeper Kyleigh Dahlgren, but could not score.  Marietta outshot Muskingum 9-6 in the first 45 minutes but neither teams was able to put a notch on the board.  The two teams entered intermission in a scoreless tie.

Marietta got on the board in the 62nd minute of the second half when Kontul took a pass from Izzy Hank (North Olmsted, Ohio/Holy Name) and deposited it in the net for the game's first score.  Marietta kept the lead for almost the remainder of the game, but Muskingum was able to tie with five minutes left on the clock.  Muskingum's Gracie McNeal squeaked a shot pass Marietta goalkeeper Sarah Legg (Edgewood, Ky./Dixie Heights) to tie it up at one.  Neither team could muster much more offense and both teams battled to a 1-1 draw as time expired.

Legg played all 90 minutes in goal, she faced 11 shots,  six of which were on goal, and made five saves.

Marietta will finally return home to Marietta Field on Saturday (Oct. 8) when they host John Carroll University, with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
