Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women’s Soccer falls to John Carroll in return home

MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College women's soccer team was beaten 2-1 by John Carroll on Saturday (Oct. 7) evening.  With the loss the Pioneers are now 3-6-1 overall and 0-2-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference and with the win the Blue Streaks improve to 7-1-3 overall and 3-0 in OAC action.

"We're getting better every day," said Head Coach Zack Votra. "This team gives me a new reason to be proud of them every day. We really can't ask for more."

The game was back and forth for the first few minutes with nothing to show for it, but the Blue Streaks got the first break of the game.   Madyson Rosado found herself on the breakaway towards the Pioneer goal.  She sent a shot towards Marietta goalkeeper Sarah Legg (Edgewood, Ky./Dixie Heights), who got a hand on the ball.  The ball then deflected off the top crossbar and right back to Rosado, who took the rebound and headed it into the goal for the first score of the game.

The Pioneers evened the score four minutes later as Angelene Kontul (Solon, Ohio/Solon) sent a corner kick into the box and, after a massive scrum for the ball, Emma Egli (Homeworth, Ohio/West Branch) was able to sneak a shot in the net to tie it at 1-1.  Marietta was only able to get off three first shots in total, but still took the 1-1 tie into the intermission.

The two teams battled into the second period but John Carroll was able to the break the tie in the 55th minute.  Rosado again was able to score, this time off of an Abby Smith assist, and the Blue Steaks retook the lead.  JCU goalkeeper Madeline Martin Kosier kept Marietta scoreless in the second half as she made five of her six total saves in the half.  The Blues Streaks hung on for a tough 2-1 conference victory.

Legg played all 90 minutes in goal for the Pioneers, she faced 15 shots, 12 of which were on goal, and made 10 saves in the match.

Marietta will return to the field Wednesday (Oct. 11) when they welcome in the University of Mount Union, with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
