MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College women's soccer team lost an Ohio Athletic Conference match at Otterbein, 3-1, on Wednesday (Oct. 25) evening. With the loss the Pioneers fall to 5-8-2 overall and 2-4-2 in OAC play and with the win the Cardinals are 11-3-2 overall and 7-1 in the OAC.
Otterbein opened the scoring in the 17th minute of the match when Camryn Earl chipped a shot with her back heel, pushing it over the head of Marietta goalkeeper
Sarah Legg (Edgewood, Ky./Dixie Heights) and putting it in the net. The Pioneers attempted three shots in the first half, but Ella Schwertfager was able to make the stop on the only shot on goal. Otterbein took the 1-0 lead into the half.
The Cardinals scored their second goal of the match in the 62nd minute when Earl fired a shot that bounced off the crossbar and Bailey Zanella deposited the rebound into the net.
The Pioneers finally answered in the 72nd minute as
Anna Bardwell (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville Central) found the back of the net and cut the Cardinal lead in half. The joy was short-lived, though, as the Cardinals immediately answered with an insurance goal in the 73rd minute from Lauren Alley. The Pioneers ran out of time and would lose the tough OAC matchup, 3-1.
Legg played all 90 minutes in the net for Marietta. She faced 15 shots, eight of which were on goal, and made five saves.
The Pioneers will return to action Saturday (Oct. 28) for their final regular season when they travel Ohio Northern with kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m.
