MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College women's soccer team put together a complete game as they celebrated Homecoming, as well as their members of the senior class, defeating Heidelberg, 3-0 on Saturday (Oct. 21) afternoon. With the win the Pioneers improve to 5-7-2 overall and 2-3-2 in the Ohio Athletic Conference and with the win the Student Princes improve to 4-8-2 overall and 2-5 in OAC play.

Both teams started with early shots, but none getting into the net. Seniors
Demi Mills (Batavia, Ohio/West Clermont) and
Lydia Vach (Maineville, Ohio/Little Miami) rocketed shot from way outside the box, only to sail high over the net. The Student Princes sent shot toward Marietta goalkeeper
Sarah Legg (Edgewood, Ky./Dixie Heights), to which she made easy saves on. The Pioneers finally broke through in the 18th minute when
Angelene Kontul (Solon, Ohio/Solon) sent a shot into the upper left portion of the goal, off of an Emma
Egli assist, giving Marietta a 1-0 lead.
Marietta got three more shots on goal before the half finished, but Heidelberg's Meredith Bruce successfully stopped them and kept the score at 1-0. Marietta led into the intermission, outshooting Heidelberg 10-6 in the half.
The Pioneers stepped up the offensive pressure and extended the lead in the 56th minute of the match as
Kaylie Ward (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Falls), one of the Pioneer seniors celebrated in the pregame, placed her shot in the goal and giving Marietta a 2-0 lead. Another senior honored before the game,
Melissa Szawranskyj (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville North), added an insurance tally in the 67th minute, off of a
Taylor Sloan (Belpre, Ohio/Warren) assist, and Marietta would cruise to a 3-0 victory.
Senior
Anna Bardwell (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville Central) was honored before the game and played well in the victory.
Emma Diorio (Bellbrook, Ohio/Bellbrook) and
Sarah Crim (Mount Clare, W.Va./R.C. Byrd) were injured and could not play in the matchup but were honored along with their senior teammates.
Legg played 85 minutes in net for Marietta and faced 13 shots, and collected seven saves.
Alli Stahl (Batavia, Ohio/West Clermont) worked the final five minutes and made one save.
The Pioneers will return to the field Wednesday (Oct. 25) when they welcome in Otterbein, with the game scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
